Tom Cruise never reads his scripts before accepting role

Tom Cruise is getting candid about how he gets things done behind the scenes. During one of his latest appearances, the famed actor opened up about his filmmaking process. The actor revealed that he never reads scripts and instead makes someone else do the reading for him.

Tom Cruise admits he never read a script before accepting a role

The ‘Mission: Impossible’ actor recently revealed that he does not read scripts before accepting roles. While talking to Travis Kelce on his ‘New Heights’ podcast, Cruise got candid about his process of picking his roles in the film industry. “What I do with directors and writers is I don’t read the scripts,” Cruise admitted, further adding, “ I have them read it to me because I don’t want my ideas to invade it yet.

I want to understand their communication.

They’ve been working on it, and they have things that are just there.”Not only that, but he also admitted that having someone tell him the story also helps him in identifying the strong points and weak points of the script and what all can be worked upon. “I’m the audience. I am a movie; I’m a popcorn guy. Like, I’m a meat-and-potatoes, popcorn [guy]. Is it moving me, or am I invested? Am I not invested? Where am I engaged? Where am I not engaged? That’s just who I am," he added, revealing that he likes to get into the mindset of the person who will be paying to watch the film in theaters before accepting the role.

Tom Cruise believes that a script is not the only thing to base his decision on

Before accepting any roles, Cruise also shared that he loves to get into the director’s mind and ask him about how he is planning to shoot the film. He aims to know everything he can, which includes asking the director about his plans regarding things like lighting, cinematography, wardrobe, and more.He added, “We get to a place where I start to understand, and then I’m like, 'I know how to contribute to that motion.'" Now, it sparks ideas, and I kind of have certain ideas that I have and certain things that I’d like to play with.

And then, I don’t necessarily talk about it. I just do it.”

On the work front, Cruise will next appear in one of his first original films in over a decade, 'Digger.' The plot revolves around a rich businessman who is dubbed as ‘the most powerful man in the world.’ However, when his facility and his actions cause a nuclear event that is capable of ending Earth as we know it, he sets out on a mission to prove that he is, in fact, the ‘most powerful man in the world’ and the saviour of all mankind.

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the film is slated for release on October 2 this year.
