Govt to enfranchise its citizens economically: Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Cooperatives Ferry Juliantono said the government is committed to stepping in for citizens facing social and economic challenges.
"Under President Prabowo Subianto's leadership, we will ensure the state steps up to deliver true independence for those who are not yet economically and socially independent," Juliantono said during the 81st Indonesian Independence Day ceremony in Jakarta on Monday.
According to the Ministry's press release, Ferry noted the Indonesia's Independence Day should be viewed as a mandate to carry forward the founding fathers' vision, including efforts to achieve justice and prosperity for all citizens.
He underscored the central role of his Ministry in helping the public fully feel the impact of independence, particularly on the economic front.
"This is our duty at the Ministry of Cooperatives. With support from the public, hopefully we can truly ensure that we achieve total independence," Juliantono noted.

His remarks come as the government moves to strengthen cooperatives as a driver for economic equality, notably through the Red-White Village Cooperative programme.
Through the initiative, the government aims to establish communities at village level to have economic frameworks that can improve access to finance, the distribution of essential goods, and the development of local businesses.
He also stressed the spirit of true independence means the state must play an active role in bolstering social and economic welfare.
On that occasion, Juliantono also expressed his deepest condolences to those affected by the recent earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara, wishing the local community strength and safety.
