NBC has taken a step toward extending its first-year drama Line of Fire.

The network has asked for five additional scripts for the series, which revolves around a family of federal law enforcement agents. The order comes as Line of Fire has posted solid ratings numbers over its first three episodes.

The script order doesn’t necessarily mean NBC will ask for more produced episodes, but if that does end up happening, Line of Fire will have up to 18 episodes in its first season after an initial order of 13. It’s also something of an old-school broadcast move (in keeping with some other things NBC has done recently).

Created by Joshua Safran (Gossip Girl, Quantico), Line of Fire centers on the Hollingsworth family, all of whom work in various branches of federal law enforcement and who seem to be targeted by an unknown killer. Peter Krause, Hope Davis, Kat Cunning, Tommy O’Brien, Taylor Bloom and Charlie Barnett star.

The Sept. 21 series premiere has drawn 12 million cross-platform viewers (including on-air repeats) to date, and the show has improved its 10 p.m. Monday time period considerably over the start of the 2025-26 season. Line of Fire’s same-day audience of 2.98 million viewers is 34 percent higher than that of Brilliant Minds in the same spot a year ago; over three days of cross-platform viewing, the margin grows to 47 percent.

Universal Television produces Line of Fire. Safran is the showrunner and executive produces with Jenna Bush Hager and Ben Spector.
