Jennifer Lawrence Did Not Start Her Beauty Brand Because of Hollywood Instability: ‘A Smarter Exit Plan Would Be Signing Up for a Big Franchise’

Jennifer Lawrence has officially entered the celebrity beauty game with the launch of her haircare brand Mes, but the Oscar winner’s career pivot is not a reaction to Hollywood instability. Speaking to The Cut, Lawrence said that if she worried about the money Hollywood could bring in then “a smarter exit plan would be signing up for a big franchise.”

“Starting a new company to get rich feels like jumping off a cruise ship to land on a door,” the actor added.

Mes, per The Cut, is a “biodesigned haircare” company that is “selling three products: a repair mask, a restyling serum, and a volumizing mist. [Lawrence] partnered with an MIT-trained scientist to develop new formulas they claim will change your hair in ways nothing else on the market can.”

Lawrence explained that moving from acting into the haircare space felt like a natural extension of her interests as a performance because “there is an undeniable energetic thing that happens when you’re creating things, whether it’s a movie or a product. I got that same electric buzz I get from building a character. It’s like, ‘Well, I have to follow this because it’s the same animal.'”

So what is Lawrence most nervous about as she launches a beauty brand? She told The Cut she hopes people stick with the products and don’t grow impatient.

“If you make a texturizing spray, everybody knows what to expect,” Lawrence explained. “These are brand-new products. So my fear is somebody will get a first impression without actually taking the time to figure out how it works with their hair.”

Lawrence added of waiting to see the reception, “I imagine it’s going to be like when a movie comes out, where there has to be this release of tension. I’ll try and get Zen with it. But I’ll probably just have wine for breakfast.”
