Traffic nightmare looms as section of Waiyaki Way set for month-long partial closure
Motorists using the Mombasa-bound lanes of Waiyaki Way between Kempinski and the Museum Hill Interchange will face a month of traffic disruption as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) carries out maintenance works.
The partial closure will take effect on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and run until Saturday, November 7, 2026, according to a notice issued by KeNHA.
The affected section forms part of the A8 road and will be partially closed to provide space for maintenance crews while allowing traffic to continue using the available lanes.
KeNHA has warned motorists to expect slower traffic, particularly during peak hours, as the reduced carriageway could affect traffic flow along the busy corridor linking western Nairobi to the Central Business District.
The works could also increase congestion on neighbouring roads as motorists seek alternative routes around Museum Hill and connecting areas.
Motorists in Kangemi, Mountain View, Kitisuru, Loresho, Kyuna, Spring Valley, Highridge, Muthangari, Lower Kabete and parts of Riverside are also expected to feel the impact of the works.
The disruption could extend to motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, with Waiyaki Way serving as a key link between Nairobi and the Rift Valley.
KeNHA has urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes where possible.
“Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the authority said.
Drivers have also been advised to approach the affected section with caution, obey temporary traffic signs and follow directions from traffic marshals.
Normal traffic operations will resume once the maintenance works are completed.
