2 Malaysians injured as Typhoon Champi lashes Taiwan

Translate

Two Malaysians in Taiwan are receiving treatment for minor injuries following Typhoon Champi’s landfall, which left at least one dead and hundreds injured.

The foreign ministry said this was confirmed by the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taipei City, adding that the pair was receiving consular assistance, Bernama reported.

“The centre continues to be in close contact with Malaysian students in Taiwan and local authorities to monitor developments and preserve the wellbeing of Malaysians there,” said Wisma Putra.

It advised Malaysians living in or visiting Taiwan to exercise caution amid the typhoon, and particularly avoid beaches and mountainous areas.

The typhoon, packing gusts of around 126km per hour near its centre, has led to power cuts and fallen trees in Taiwan. One man on the island of Liuqiu died after being swept away by waves during the typhoon.

It also led to nearly 1,000 flights being cancelled yesterday and 242 today.
