A police officer has been found dead on the roof of his station days before he was due to face a misconduct probe.

The Met constable, who was in his 50s, is suspected of having killed himself.

He was set to face a gross misconduct investigation this month after reportedly failing a random alcohol breath test in July.

The officer drove response vehicles in the capital but was pulled for a breath test after allegedly struggling with personal issues and alcohol.

He was reported missing by his colleagues when he failed to turn up for his shift on Thursday.

His body was found later that day at Kensington police station in west London.

The Metropolitan Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

An inquest will now be held into the death and it has been reported to the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

A source told The Sun that the officer only narrowly failed the breath test – which is set at a lower limit than civilians.

He was suspended from his duties while the investigation was ongoing.

A source added: 'There have been suggestions he may have been struggling with personal issues and alcohol which was why he was tested.'

For police officers, 13 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres is considered over the limit.

The legal breath-alcohol limit to drive in Britain is 35 micrograms.

A close colleague wrote: 'The blue line will never be the same, was there at the start all those years ago. A true legend.'

The Police Federation has previously warned about the 'silent crisis of police suicide'.

It said that more than 100 police officers and staff had died by suicide between 2022 and 2025 and that more than 200 had attempted to do so.

At least 70 of those who died were serving police.

It added that 47 of the 70 suicides involved officers under misconduct or criminal investigation.

In 2025, 12 of the 13 known police suicides involved those facing investigation.

Retired Metropolitan Police Detective Chief Inspector Mick Neville said: 'Chief constables need to change the way they treat vulnerable staff facing misconduct proceedings.'

The Met was contacted for comment.
