Translate

JAKARTA: Indonesian police have named four suspects in connection with the Virgo Transport 8 ferry that capsized and sank in the Java Sea on Sept 13.

South Kalimantan police Sigit Haryono said the suspects were the ship's captain, an official from shipping and logistics company PT Virgo Karya Shipping, the company's branch manager and its operations manager.

He said the captain was being held at the South Kalimantan police headquarters, while the other three suspects had been summoned for questioning.

As of today, 80 victims had been found dead, while 108 survived and 55 remained missing, according to the National Search and Rescue Agency.

The ferry, carrying 243 people, departed Surabaya in East Java on Sept 12 for Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

It encountered bad weather during the voyage and lost contact at around 2am local time on Sept 13.
