Indonesia targets October submission of I-EU CEPA ratification

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA) is expected to be submitted for ratification in the European Union this October.

According to him, this follows the preparation of a legal draft of the agreement in English, which he stated is now in the finalization stage.

"Regarding the I-EU CEPA, we are awaiting the completion of the legal drafting in English. Once this is complete, we hope it can be submitted for ratification in the EU in October," he informed in a press statement on Tuesday.

He had previously set a target for the I-EU CEPA to be signed this year, allowing its implementation to commence in early 2027.

Hartarto views the I-EU CEPA as an important instrument for opening market access opportunities for Indonesia's leading commodities and products, increasing trade, and strengthening the engagement of Indonesian businesses and the European Union.

"The CEPA creates stronger market access, trade, and business engagement between Indonesia and the European Union," he remarked.

Earlier, Minister of Trade Budi Santoso expressed optimism that the I-EU CEPA could be signed by the end of October 2026, in line with the government's target for the agreement to enter into force in early 2027.

He said the government was continuing preparations to finalize the agreement, including through coordination with the European Union and its member states.

He added that once implemented, the agreement would enable many Indonesian export products to enter the European market at zero-percent tariffs.

Santoso stated that the I-EU CEPA negotiations took 10 years and have now been completed, making this a significant achievement for all parties, especially Indonesian exporters.

He addressed that speeding up the implementation of the bilateral trade deal is vital to creating a seamless transition from the standard EU's Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP) facility, which will cease covering Indonesian goods in 2027.

"We hope to ensure a smooth transition to the CEPA. Indonesia also looks forward to meaningful market access for sustainable palm oil and its derivatives, footwear, textiles, and fishery products," he said.
