Indonesia seeks Asian partners to build semiconductor ecosystem

Let us work together and grow together to escape the middle-income trap.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of National Development Planning is pushing for greater cross-border cooperation across Asia to build a semiconductor industry ecosystem, aiming to increase the value added to natural resources and strengthen economic competitiveness amid rapid technological change.
National Development Planning Minister Rachmat Pambudy said Asian countries need to strengthen collaboration to promote shared growth rather than compete against one another in strategic industries.
“I see the ambassadors of India and Singapore here. We can build a shared ecosystem with other Asian nations,” he said at the Danantara Technology & Innovation Investment Forum (DTIIF) 2026 in Jakarta on Monday.
“Our country is large enough, and our neighbors are strong enough. Let us work together and grow together to escape the middle-income trap. If Indonesia grows faster, Singapore should be happy, and India should be happy as well,” he added.
Pambudy emphasized that developing Indonesia’s semiconductor industry must go beyond assembly operations to encompass a comprehensive industrial ecosystem.
Achieving this goal, he said, will require a skilled workforce supported by education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as greater investment in research and innovation centers.
He also stressed that Indonesia must combine its abundant natural resources with technological expertise and innovation to strengthen its economic competitiveness. Without these capabilities, the country risks remaining dependent on raw material exports with limited added value.
Beyond expanding research capacity, Pambudy highlighted the importance of making innovations more widely accessible and applicable across sectors, ensuring that the benefits of technological progress extend beyond research centers.
He said Indonesia has significant potential to enhance its competitiveness by advancing technological capabilities, maximizing the value of its natural resources, and developing its human capital.
Collaboration with other Asian countries, he added, could also help drive sustainable economic growth and improve public welfare.
