Palembang (ANTARA) - The Ampera Bridge in Palembang, South Sumatra, has been designated as a national cultural heritage site by the central government due to its significant historical and cultural value.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated in Palembang on Friday that the bridge's status as a national cultural heritage site grants the central government the flexibility to intervene and undertake revitalization efforts.

According to him, the Ampera Bridge met the criteria for the designation because it has stood for over 50 years and is an integral part of the local community's daily life.

"The designation was made following a process of assessment, research, and recommendations from the National Cultural Heritage Expert Team," he said.

He noted that cultural heritage status is essential to ensure a clear inventory of historical assets, allowing them to be protected, developed, and utilized without compromising their historical value.

The icon of Palembang, which spans the Musi River, holds not only historical significance but also serves as a key element of the city's identity and development.

"The Ministry of Culture will certainly undertake interventions, such as revitalization, to ensure the Ampera Bridge can be developed and utilized while preserving its historical value," he said.

Meanwhile, Palembang Mayor Ratu Dewa explained that the Ampera Bridge was designated as a national cultural heritage site because it embodies significant historical assets and values associated with various historic structures and infrastructure.

According to Dewa, designating the Ampera Bridge as a cultural heritage site strengthens the protection of the nation's historical, architectural, scientific, and socio-cultural heritage.

"Moving forward, we plan to manage Towers 1 and 2 for tourism purposes, enabling visitors to ascend and descend the structure," he said.
