Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for VisionQuest episodes 3 & 4
With Avengers: Doomsday now less than two months away, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has surprisingly just debuted an all-new Human Torch beyond the version played by Joseph Quinn (or even Chris Evans' earlier variant). Despite being primarily recognized as Johnny Storm's superhero moniker with The Fantastic Four, the "Human Torch" name has a greater history in the comics, which has now been further confirmed in the established MCU canon.
Expanding the lore and history of artificial intelligence in the MCU, Marvel's new VisionQuest series is finally paying off a tease that was first made over 15 years ago. As seen in the newly released VisionQuest episode 4, a brand-new character has been confirmed, making MCU history as the first true Human Torch of Earth-616.
Although VisionQuest hasn't fully explored this new Human Torch yet, the show's latest reveals have already laid an exciting foundation for his place in future episodes.
Who Is JIM? The MCU's First Human Torch Explained
As seen in VisionQuest episode 4, Paul Bettany's Vision and Ruaridh Mollica's Thomas Shepard attend a gala held by Markridge Biotech CEO Katerina Wells, a key figure in the field of AI whose company was purchased by Stark Industries for their work on AI, becoming the foundation for many of the AI programs Tony Stark would create in the MCU. Likewise, the gala also features tributes to Doctor Phineas Horton, the great-grandfather of robotics and AI in the MCU and the creator of JIM, the MCU's first Synthetic Man.
JIM is Jim Hammond, also known as the Synthetic Man and the original Human Torch in Marvel Comics. On the page, writer and artist Carl Burgos created Hammond for 1939's Marvel Comics #1, well before Johnny Storm and The Fantastic Four appeared in 1961. Capable of bursting into flames and controlling fire, Jim Hammond was an android and one of the earliest Golden Age superheroes, fighting alongside Captain America and Namor during various WWII stories.
In VisionQuest episode 4, it's revealed that JIM was the first synthetic consciousness created by Phineas Horton, holding the source code behind all future artificial intelligence in the MCU. However, JIM malfunctioned due to an inability to process complex emotions, resulting in his body bursting into flames. As Vision explains to Thomas, the Mind Stone helped him avoid the same flaws, with the Infinity Stone's cosmic effects helping his systems reconcile and "bridge the gap between the mind and the heart."
Although JIM has yet to be called the Human Torch in the MCU (and he may not ever), the first Synthetic Man is still technically the original and first Human Torch in the MCU's main Earth-616 reality all the same, especially with Joseph Quinn's Johnny Storm having yet to make his way to Earth-616 in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Furthermore, it's also worth noting that JIM was technically first teased 15 years ago in the MCU.
JIM's VisionQuest Role Pays Off A 15-Year-Old MCU Tease
JIM's confirmed MCU history and fate is particularly exciting, as it pays off an Easter egg that's been sitting in the MCU since 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger. During the film's first act, just before Howard Stark shows off his prototype flying car, a display promotes Horton's Synthetic Man in a glass capsule. While this was a nod to Jim Hammond, the movie never specified what happened to him or if he ever became more than a prototype at the Stark Expo.
Question 1 of 3
Now, VisionQuest has finally expanded JIM's history 15 years later, making him a crucial part of the origins of every AI program in the MCU. Likewise, we also know that we'll soon see and learn more about JIM in future episodes, with Marvel Studios having already confirmed that Paul Bettany himself will be playing JIM in some capacity, most likely in a flashback to the Synthetic Man's creation with Dr. Phineas Horton.
Johnny Storm is undoubtedly the Human Torch audiences are most familiar with, especially with his next appearance in Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon. However, JIM's confirmed history and imminent debut after 15 years is arguably just as exciting as the MCU's original Human Torch.
