John Carpenter's Escape From New York Returns With Its Wildest Installment Yet (Exclusive)

John Carpenter’s anti-hero Snake Plissken returns for the next installment of the Escape From New York series: Escape From the North Pole, courtesy of Mad Cave Studios. This past week, the publisher released the continuation of Plissken’s adventures with Escape From Chicago. Now, Plissken is heading to frozen northern wastelands for his most dangerous mission yet, and ScreenRant is pleased to debut a first look.
Escape From New York, directed by Carpenter from a screenplay by him and Nick Castle, was another triumph for John when it debuted in theaters in 1981. Starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a former Special Forces operative on the eve of being sent to prison, the movie was, according to Carpenter, a response to the Watergate Scandal. Also tapping into an early 1980s fear of a rise in violent crime, Escape From New York was a box office success, and helped Russell transition to action hero status.
15 years after Escape From New York, Snake Plissken returned in Escape From LA. The film saw the reunion of Carpenter and Russell, but it failed to recreate the magic of the original, and it bombed at the box office. The franchise lay dormant until this month, when Mad Cave Studios released the aforementioned Escape From Chicago. If Plissken thought he was finished after that, he was mistaken, as a new mission is sending him all the way to the North Pole.
Snake Plissken Heads to the North in Escape From the North Pole by Mad Cave Studios
Today, Mad Cave Studios has announced Escape From New York: Escape From the North Pole, a new one-shot from writer Fred Kennedy, artist Danilo Beyruth and letterer Jeff Eckleberry. Mad Cave released a plot synopsis for Escape From the North Pole, shared here:

Hard-as-nails antihero Snake Plisskin is dragged to Camp Vincent (AKA Ellesmere Island Containment Facility), the northernmost prison in the world, after being caught smuggling contraband across the border. He’s now in the custody of the Canadian Shield, an organization tasked with patrolling the Arctic and wiping out any Soviet factions that remain following the aftermath of WWIII. Snake is an asset, and they intend to use him.
He’s given a choice: track down and rescue Soviet Geneticist Dr. Svetlana Lysenko from a Siberian Bioweapons facility where experiments have mutated into dangerous abominations, or remain on Ellesmere island… Permanently.
Furthermore, Escape From the North Pole will ship with two covers: one by Adam Gorham and another by Ken Lashley. Mad Cave provided ScreenRant with an exclusive first look at these covers, shared below.
Both Kennedy and Beyruth were excited to dive head first into the dark and violent world of Snake Plissken. Speaking with Mad Cave Studios, Kennedy, whose other credits include The Florida Hippopotamus Cocaine Massacre, had this to say about Escape From the North Pole:

Calling Kennedy’s script “high-octane,” Beyruth, who previously drew Carnage for Marvel, said:

Mad Cave Is Taking Fans Beyond New York and LA In Escape From the North Pole
The opening minutes of Escape From New York painted a grim picture of the world. In the film, America experiences a 400% surge in violent crime, resulting in Manhattan being converted into a giant maximum security prison. In addition, the Cold War, still raging when the movie was released, was in danger of heating up and going nuclear. In the real world, the Soviet Union fell in 1991, but in Escape From New York’s timeline, it was still very real, as was the threat of "mutually assured destruction.”
Now, Escape From New York: Escape From the North Pole is here to continue building the world John Carpenter began 45 years ago.

Plissken’s sojourn to Earth’s most northern parts will give fans a tantalizing glimpse of other countries, such as Canada and the Soviet Union. Plissken saw combat in the Special Forces, and he may have a history with the Soviets, one that he must reckon with if he wishes to complete his mission.
Finally, Plissken will have to fight people who have been mutated into monstrous creatures, something lacking from previous Escape From New York movies. These mutants, who sadly Mad Cave did not give an advanced look at, will pose a threat unlike any other for John Carpenter’s anti-hero Snake Plissken, as he returns for his most dangerous mission yet in Escape From the North Pole.
