Nigeria remain the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), having won the continental championship a record 10 times.

The Super Falcons claimed their latest title in 2025 after producing a remarkable comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final, extending their dominance in African women’s football.

Since the tournament was first held in 1991, only three countries have lifted the WAFCON trophy: Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.

The competition, which is traditionally held every two years, has been dominated by Nigeria, who have won the majority of the titles.

Equatorial Guinea have won the tournament twice, while South Africa have one championship to their name.

1. Nigeria – 10 titles

Titles: 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2025

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are comfortably the most successful team in WAFCON history, with 10 titles to their name.

Their first official triumph came in 1998 when they defeated Ghana 2-0 in the final on home soil. They successfully defended the title two years later with another 2-0 victory, this time against hosts South Africa.

Nigeria went on to beat Ghana in the 2002 final, before defeating Cameroon 5-0 in 2004 and Ghana 1-0 in 2006.

After failing to win the 2008 edition, the Super Falcons returned to the top in 2010, beating Equatorial Guinea 4-2 in the final.

They added further titles in 2014, 2016 and 2018. Their 2018 triumph came after a goalless final against South Africa, with Nigeria winning 4-3 on penalties.

Nigeria then produced one of the most memorable comebacks in WAFCON history in 2025, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final and secure their 10th continental crown.

The Super Falcons also hold several tournament records, including the most WAFCON wins, appearances and goals scored.

2. Equatorial Guinea – 2 titles

Titles: 2008, 2012

Equatorial Guinea are the only other team to have won the WAFCON more than once.

They made history in 2008 by becoming the first country other than Nigeria to lift the trophy. Playing at home, Equatorial Guinea defeated South Africa 2-1 in the final after eliminating defending champions Nigeria in the semi-finals.

Four years later, the National Nzalang claimed their second title on home soil.

They defeated Cameroon 2-0 in the semi-final before recording a convincing 4-0 victory over South Africa in the final to become two-time African champions.

3. South Africa – 1 title

Title: 2022

South Africa finally ended years of near misses by winning their maiden WAFCON title in 2022.

Banyana Banyana had previously finished runners-up on five occasions before finally breaking their duck in Morocco.

They defeated the hosts 2-1 in the final in Rabat to claim their first continental championship.

Despite the growing competitiveness of women’s football across Africa, the WAFCON trophy has remained in the hands of just three nations since the competition began.
