New Resident Evil Reboot Film Opens at #1 at U.S. Box Office With US$60 Million
Box Office Mojo reported that Sony Pictures Entertainment's live-action film reboot of CAPCOM's Resident Evil survival horror game franchise has earned an estimated US$60 million to top its opening weekend at the U.S. box office. The film earned an estimated US$26,550,000 on its opening day on Friday, an estimated US$20,250,000 on Saturday, and an estimated US$13,200,000 on Sunday. Box Office Mojo also reported that it earned US$48,300,000 overseas for a global estimated total of US$108,300,000.
In addition, the 40th anniversary re-release of The Transformers: The Movie in 4K earned an estimated US$3,103,922 to rank #8 at the weekend U.S. box office. The film earned an estimated US$844,557 on Friday, an estimated US$1,369,312 on Saturday, and an estimated US$890,053 on Sunday. The re-release had earned US$1,052,609 on its opening day on Thursday for an estimated total earnings of US$4,156,531.
The new live-action Resident Evil film will open in Japan on October 9.
The film stars Austin Abrams (Weapons, Euphoria, Wolfs) as Bryan. The cast also includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser (Richard Jewell, Black Bird, The Fantastic Four: First Steps).
Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) directed the new film.
Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions produced the new reboot film. Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead) co-wrote the screenplay along with Cregger. Constantin's Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee (Minecraft), Miri Yoon (Woman of the Hour), and PlayStation Productions produced the movie, and Nicole Brown oversaw it. Dariusz Wolski was the director of photography.
This film is the eighth live-action film in the franchise, and Sony also released the previous movies. Four studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, were bidding for the new film's rights.
The first six films in the franchise opened between 2002 and 2017, and all starred Milla Jovovich. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the first live-action film reboot in the franchise, opened in the United States in November 2021, and then opened in Japan in January 2022.
Resident Evil: Death Island (Japanese title: Biohazard: Death Island), the latest CG animated film in the franchise, opened in July 2023.
The Resident Evil requiem (Biohazard requiem) game launched on February 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game has exceeded 6 million units in cumulative sales worldwide. The game is the fastest to reach the milestone in the Resident Evil series.
