Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Feels Like a Game a Decade Out of Time

For the TGS demo, my pre-created player character left his room and approached Gamma from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Gamma sent me on a quest to defeat first a swarm of nameless mooks, and then Broly alongside three other CPU-controlled player characters.
At my disposal for battle I had light attacks and strong attacks, ways to power up those attacks using Ki, special equipable attacks (like the Kamehameha and Kaioken), and a button to close the distance with the enemy I was locked on to. I also had the ability to summon other Dragon Ball characters—in this case, Vegeta and Trunks—which would allow me to transform into them for a limited time. This gave me a whole new moveset to play with and healed my normal character while he was off the field.
Fighting the mooks was basically a slaughterfest; I don't think I took damage once. The game was little more than spamming familiar moves from the anime when they were off cool down and punching endlessly when they weren't. Broly, at the very least, was a bit of a threat.
Throughout the fight, Broly would power up—become invincible and shoot energy balls in all directions. To survive, you had to either get very far away, or use the terrain as a shield. Broly also had a “get off me” attack where he would create an explosion around himself to knock the hero characters out of melee range and stun them. Dodging this was the key to keeping the pressure on. But while it was nice that the Broly fight actually had mechanics you needed to pay attention to, it was hardly difficult.
When it comes down to it, everything in Xenoverse 3's demo felt horribly dated. The controls were clunky and overly complicated. The environments were bland and undetailed—and the graphics as a whole felt no better than Xenoverse 2 on the PS4 did a decade past. If you are the most hardcore of hardcore Xenoverse fans who just want more of what you love—or just want to meet your favorite Dragon Ball characters and play around with their moves—you'll probably enjoy messing around with this game. If not, this demo left me feeling that you'll likely find it a waste of time.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows sometime in 2027.
