Mahama pushes local gold refining to boost Ghana’s economic gains

Translate

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana is working to increase the economic benefits it derives from its gold resources by expanding local assaying, refining and related services.

The initiative, being implemented through the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and the country’s gold refining policy, is intended to deepen domestic participation in the gold value chain and reduce dependence on the extraction and export of raw minerals.

Addressing the Mining in Motion Conference on Monday, October 19, President Mahama underscored the importance of building local capacity to process minerals and undertake other value-added activities to ensure that more of the wealth generated from Ghana’s natural resources stays in the country.

“Through the Ghana Gold Board and our gold refining policy, we are working to retain more value through assaying, refining, and related services,” he said.

The policy is expected to enhance Ghana’s ability to test and refine gold domestically while creating opportunities for local businesses and professionals in the mining and mineral processing industries.

The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s position in the gold value chain and maximise the economic returns from its mineral resources.
