In one small town, the golf estate offers safety and an affordable way to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle.

South Africa’s Safest Golf Estate

The Katberg Eco Golf Estate on the outskirts of Balfour could be the country’s safest golf estate.

Katberg in Seymour is in the Amathole region of the Eastern Cape.

The town has a population of 4 536 and a crime rate of 3.09%.

In the three months ending June 2026, the town reported 22 crimes, down from the same period last year when 33 crimes were reported.

The most common crime in Balfour is residential burglary; in the first quarter, 6 such crimes were reported.

Property in Katberg

The Katberg golf estate is a 400-hectare estate set in the Winterberg mountains.

The estate overlooks the 18-hole championship golf course and adjoining hotel.

Property in the Katberg golf estate starts at R40 000. But a handful of properties are on sale for R90 000.

So far this year, 15 sales were registered with the deeds office. The average sale price among these is R66 000.

All of these sales have been plots. However, a rare listing for a fully furnished 4-bedroom home is on the market for R2 million.

Life in Balfour

Buyers should prepare for life away from city amenities.

The Katberg Eco Golf Estate is very remote.

It’s a 2-hour 30-minute drive from Ko Gumpo City (East London) on the R351. Large portions of the road leading to the estate are untarred.

It’s roughly a 3-hour drive from Port Elizabeth.

The nearest city is Qonce (King William’s Town), 2 hours away, where residents can find amenities like malls and medical facilities.

Of course, closer to home, residents can spend their time at the Katberg Manor golf clubhouse, which has tennis courts, a pool, and a restaurant.

In the vicinity, residents can go trout fishing or explore the hiking and mountain biking trails.
