The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake launched without the inclusion of a Master Quest mode, but it looks like that might not be the case forever. Master Quest originally debuted as a perk of Ocarina of Time's GameCube port in 2003, featuring increased difficulty and modified dungeon layouts to give returning players a fresh challenge.

When Ocarina of Time received its first remake for the 3DS, a new Master Quest came as part of the package, with this version mirroring the layout of the game and doubling the damage dealt by enemies. Now, data found within the game files for the latest remake suggests that Switch 2 fans have a similar experience in store.

Lord Jabu-Jabu in the Ocarina of Time remake

MrCheeze, a bluesky user who "reverse engineer"s games, shared a look data from the Ocarina of Time remake game files that includes the repeated appearance of "MQ." A screenshot shows the repeated use of "DodongoCavern_MQ," and MrCheeze mentions the strings "HasMQ, IsMQModeExist, NewGameMQ," and "ReleaseMQ" as further support for the presence of a presumed Master Quest.

Bluesky user OatmealDome followed the finding up with some additional details, noting that the new Master Quest follows the 3DS approach of fully mirroring the world. It also brings back some of the stranger Master Quest modifications, like adding cows to Jabu Jabu's Belly. According to OatmealDome, the mode will be unlocked as DLC rather than added in the form of an update.

The apparent presence of a Master Quest mode in the game files doesn't necessarily guarantee that one is coming, as Nintendo could have started work on a Master Quest DLC before deciding against the release. On the whole, however, the addition of Master Quest looks likely. In an interview with IGN, producer Eiji Aonuma also left the door open for the future release of a Master Quest mode, deflecting a question by saying that Nintendo wouldn't "announce anything specific at this time."

At this point, the biggest question has to do with its nature as DLC. Unlocking as DLC doesn't necessarily mean that it will cost money, but it does make that scenario seem likely. For now, however, there are no details as to how much that DLC might cost or whether it will come with any additional content besides the addition of Master Quest.

For reference, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Expansion Pass cost $19.99 and came with new challenges, items, and a story expansion called The Champion's Ballad. A comparable DLC has never been released for Tears of the Kingdom, but both games received $9.99 Switch 2 upgrades that improve performance and add integration with mobile app features.

Nintendo may want to wait a while before announcing the inclusion of a Master Quest mode for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, allowing players to focus on the original game experience before throwing a wrench into the works. Regardless, it should be something for the game's many fans to look forward to in the future.
