As excitement builds for Apple TV's upcoming adaptations of Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, Brandon Sanderson's sprawling Cosmere is on the cusp of a bold new era that could introduce his beloved fantasy universe to an entirely new generation of fans. Apple is developing Mistborn as a feature film and The Stormlight Archive as a television series, with Sanderson saying he's completed the first draft of his Mistborn screenplay in July and recently revealed he's discussing revisions with Apple before beginning the second draft.

Aside from his on-screen work, Sanderson's latest standalone Cosmere novel, The Fires of December, recently debuted digitally ahead of its December hardcover release, to somewhat mixed reviews (so far). Meanwhile, Brotherwise Games launched a new Kickstarter campaign for Stormlight: War for Roshar, yet another exciting addition to the franchise's tabletop lineup.

And now, Mistborn is officially returning on November 18 with a brand-new release that revisits one of the original trilogy's most pivotal conflicts (via BGG).

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn is officially returning on November 18, 2026, with a new adaptation of Mistborn: The Well of Ascension in the first expansion for Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game from Brotherwise Games. Designed by John D Clair, the expansion draws inspiration from Sanderson's original 2007 novel The Well of Ascension, the second installment in the original Era 1 Mistborn trilogy, bringing new characters, abilities, and gameplay scenarios to the tabletop.

The expansion takes players back to Scadrial following the events of The Final Empire, when Vin and her allies successfully overthrew the seemingly immortal Lord Ruler. His death created a dangerous power vacuum, leaving Vin, Elend Venture, and their companions struggling to maintain control of Luthadel. The second novel explores the difficulties of rebuilding a civilization after overthrowing its tyrannical ruler, and it'll be interesting to see how the tabletop game reimagines this epic conflict.

Originally released in November 2024, Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game lets players harness the powers of Allomancy, the franchise's iconic magic system, by burning different metals to activate powerful abilities. Players construct powerful decks as they compete to defeat opponents or complete missions, while the original game also offers cooperative and solo experiences against the Lord Ruler.

The Well of Ascension expands these mechanics with four additional character cards, new dual-metal Alloy cards, additional metals, and a powerful new "Coinshot" ability. The expansion also introduces new character meeples, mission cards, and dozens of additional cards for players to incorporate into their existing decks.

Perhaps the most exciting addition is the new solo and cooperative "Siege of Luthadel" mode, which recreates one of the second novel's defining conflicts. Players cooperate to defend Luthadel against invading Koloss armies, introducing new challenges and a different approach to the original game's mechanics.

Fans actually received an early preview of the expansion during Gen Con 2026 earlier this year, where Brotherwise Games hosted demos of its new gameplay features, including dedicated Siege of Luthadel sessions that were a huge hit among players. The publisher also discussed the expansion during its State of Games in the Cosmere panel, revealing that the original deck-building game had sold more than 100,000 copies since its debut.

The Well of Ascension is scheduled to arrive at retailers on November 18, 2026, with a suggested retail price of roughly $25. Preorders are available through retailers including Game Nerdz, Gamers Guild AZ, and Superscript Comics and Games, although availability varies, with Superscript currently listing it as sold out, which isn't all that surprising given the release is less than a month away.

The expansion supports one to four players, with sessions supposed to last about 30–60 minutes a piece, and requires the original Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game to play. Its release also coincides with the franchise's 20th anniversary celebrations, making it a great way to ring in the milestone and enjoy Sanderson's expanding universe on the tabletop.
