Macroeconomic stability key to attracting investment: DEN

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chair of the National Economic Council (DEN) Mari Elka Pangestu said that macroeconomic stability is an important foundation for Indonesia to attract investment and drive higher economic growth.

"Macro stability is always important," she said at the Kontan Economic & Demographic Forum here on Tuesday.

According to her, Indonesia's main challenge at present is maintaining stability, especially amid attention to fiscal discipline and macroeconomic conditions.

She said domestic factors had also affected the movement of the rupiah, in addition to external pressures such as a stronger US dollar and rising oil prices.

"In essence, perhaps Indonesia's first challenge is to remain stable," she said.

She added that macroeconomic stability remains an important factor before the government can discuss investment policy direction further.

In addition, the government needs to maintain a business climate capable of encouraging investment from the private sector, both domestic and foreign.

She said certainty in policy direction and Indonesia's ability to create a conducive investment climate will determine investor interest in putting capital into the country.

"How is the business climate, how do we maintain the business and investment climate so that it truly encourages domestic and foreign private sectors to continue investing," she added.

Pangestu explained that economic stability can sustain Indonesia's growth at a stable level of around 5 percent.

However, she said, to push growth to a higher level beyond 5 percent, increased investment is needed to serve as a catalyst for growth.

“We can reach 5 percent if our growth just stays stable, but if we want to grow above 5 percent, that requires investment," she said.
