83-year-old driver takes car onto motorcycle U-turn bridge by mistake

SAMUT SAKHON — 15 October 2026, An 83-year-old woman accidentally drove her Nissan sedan onto a motorcycle U-turn bridge in Samut Sakhon, leaving the car stranded with three tyres burst and damaging the bridge.

Police were alerted at 13:50 to a car stuck on the motorcycle U-turn bridge near the entrance to Wat Chong Lom, on the outbound side of the road from Bangkok, in Tha Chin subdistrict, Muang district.

Officers from Muang Samut Sakhon Police Station, Tha Chin Municipality staff and rescue volunteers helped guide the silver Nissan sedan slowly backwards down the bridge. It took about 20 minutes to bring the vehicle safely to ground level. All three tyres were found damaged, and the bridge had also sustained damage.

The driver, identified only as Maneewan, 83, said she had visited a Chinese shrine in Tha Chalom for merit-making and was heading home to Phutthamonthon Sai 3 when the incident occurred.

She said she mistook the ramp for a U-turn for cars. Although she had GPS navigation switched on, she was not listening to its directions and did not notice the road signs before driving onto the bridge.

After reaching the ramp, she realised something was wrong and stopped. She said she normally remained alert while driving but acknowledged that she should have paid closer attention to the signs.

Police invited her to Muang Samut Sakhon Police Station for further questioning before proceeding in accordance with the law.
