Minister says electricity exports remain off Indonesia's agenda

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Downstream Energy and Transition Bahlil Lahadalia said Indonesia is unlikely to export electricity in the near future, as domestic demand remains high.

"Indonesia will not be able to export electricity in the near future. We still need electricity," he said at the opening of the 2026 Mineral and Coal Convention and Exhibition (Minerba Convex) in Jakarta on Monday.

He also warned the Indonesian Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) to reject lobbying by countries seeking to import electricity from Indonesia.

Bahlil, who is also the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), stated that the electricity export permit rests with the Ministry of ESDM, not Danantara.

"I have reminded Danantara, do not let them lobby you. The permit rests with ESDM, not Danantara," he emphasized.

On the occasion, he stressed that the country's sovereignty and authority must come first.

The minister also said that national sovereignty was non-negotiable.

In July 2026, Bahlil announced that negotiations were underway regarding the price of green electricity from Indonesia to Singapore, in order to provide balanced economic benefits for both countries.

He explained that the cross-border electricity trade plan is part of strengthening economic relations between the two countries, particularly in the development of green energy and the energy transition.

However, reaching an agreement on pricing is key to moving the cooperation to begin.

According to Bahlil, a balanced price agreement is crucial to ensuring that electricity exports deliver real economic benefits for Indonesia beyond commercial gains and help sustain energy cooperation with Singapore.

President Prabowo Subianto also appointed BPI Danantara to implement the cross-border electricity trade cooperation with Singapore.
