KUCHING, Sept 15 — Final preparations for the 2026 Malaysia Day celebrations at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) are at a satisfactory level, including the provision of internet facilities for media practitioners.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said an inspection with senior ministry officers tonight found that preparations for the celebration tomorrow were progressing well.

“Attention is given to, among others, the provision of items to be distributed to visitors on the night of the celebration, in addition to ministry-related items that will given out at several locations, including the (Kuching) Waterfront area,” he told reporters after inspecting the final minute preparations and full dress rehearsal for the Malaysia Day Celebrations at the BCKK last night.

Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

Fahmi also said internet coverage at BCKK was at an optimum level to ensure media practitioners could carry out their duties throughout the celebrations.

“I have spoken to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure our media friends have sufficient access to the internet, whether via Wi-Fi or mobile networks, to carry out their duties,” he said.

He said the MCMC had informed him that all equipment and hardware, which telecommunications companies needed to install, had been completed and were functioning well.

He added that the next inspection would focus on technical aspects, including the audio system, to ensure the event runs smoothly.

“Yesterday, Communications Ministry secretary-general (Datuk Abdul Halim Hamzah) informed us about issues involving the audio system, so we will examine this more closely to ensure that we have a good show ahead of Sept 16,” he said.

About 5,000 people are expected to gather at BCKK on Wednesday for the Malaysia Day Celebrations, which will be graced by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sarawak, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

The official event, which will begin at 8.15 pm, will also be attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. — Bernama
