2027: Enugu East is bleeding — Nweke

Translate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Chief Kingsley Nweke, has described the district as “bleeding”, urging journalists to remain courageous, professional and uncompromising in reporting issues affecting the people.

Nweke spoke on Sunday after a novelty football match between the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, and Nollywood actors at Ngwo Park, Achara Layout, Enugu.

He said Enugu East needed a representative with the vision, capacity and preparedness to deliver effective services to the people.

Nweke also urged journalists to uphold their responsibility of holding political leaders and public institutions accountable, stressing that the media should not compromise its role because of political or financial considerations.

According to him, the challenges confronting the senatorial district require urgent attention, adding that journalists should continue to investigate and report issues affecting the welfare and development of residents.

He urged media practitioners to adhere to the ethics of the profession and provide fair and balanced coverage to all political actors as the 2027 elections approach.

He said: “Enugu East is bleeding. We cannot continue to pretend that all is well when our people are facing serious challenges.

“The zone needs people with vision, capacity and integrity. I have been delivering good services to the people and wish to be there to accomplish what I have been doing.

“This is why journalists must not compromise. The media remains one of the strongest institutions for defending democracy and giving voice to the voiceless.”

The PDP candidate also urged political leaders and stakeholders in the district to place the interests of their constituents above personal and political considerations.

He said the 2027 elections should provide an opportunity for voters to assess candidates based on their character, competence, records and capacity to effectively represent the people.
