Every Hunger Games Death Revealed In The New Sunrise On The Reaping Trailer

The new The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping trailer gives us several glimpses of Haymitch's allies, and knowing how the story ends makes those scenes much harder to watch.

There are 48 tributes in the Second Quarter Quell, twice as many as there were in the first Hunger Games. Haymitch is one of them, and anyone who knows the original story already knows he will be the last one standing. What the trailer does not hide is just how many people he will have to lose along the way.

Some of the deaths are shown in quick flashes of violence, while others are easier to piece together if you have read Suzanne Collins' Sunrise on the Reaping. One tribute dies before the Games even begin. Others make it into the arena, fight alongside Haymitch, and become important to him before their stories come to an end.

That makes even the happier moments in the trailer feel a little ominous. Haymitch laughing with someone, fighting beside them or simply standing next to them is a reminder that their time together is limited. The trailer has already given us a look at several of those doomed tributes, along with the moments that reveal how they die.

3 Louella Dies Before The Hunger Games Even Begin

That split-second shot of the District 12 chariot crashing is going to hurt for anyone who has read Sunrise on the Reaping. The horses bolt, the chariot starts coming apart, and Louella McCoy is thrown from it. The trailer moves on almost immediately, but the book makes it clear where the scene is going.

Louella (Molly McCann) is one of Haymitch's neighbors back in District 12. Her family lives just three doors down from his, and the two have known each other since they were children. After they are reaped, Haymitch asks Louella to be his ally in the Games.

She never gets that chance. Louella hits the ground and dies from the impact, before the Games have even begun.

That makes the trailer's quick flashes of the crash especially grim. This is not an arena death after days of fighting. Haymitch watches someone he has known for years die during what is supposed to be the Capitol's big opening spectacle. For Louella, the Hunger Games are over before they ever start.

2 Lou Lou Also Dies In The Arena

Lou Lou is one of the strangest parts of the 50th Hunger Games because she was never supposed to be there in the first place. After Louella dies, the Capitol needs District 12 to still have four tributes, so it finds a replacement in a girl from District 11 who is tortured and drugged into taking Louella's place.

By the time the District 12 tributes start calling her Lou Lou, she has already been forced into a life that was never hers. The trailer gives her a few moments alongside Haymitch, and those shots mean something very different if you have read the book. She is not filling an empty spot. She is heading into the arena with everyone else, and she is going to die there too.

Exposed to the arena's poisonous environment, Lou Lou eventually dies, with Haymitch there for her final moments. By then, she has already been stripped of her own identity and forced to pretend to be someone else.

That makes her story especially bleak. The Capitol goes to extraordinary lengths to cover up Louella's death, only to send another girl into the arena and lose her anyway.

1 Maysilee's Death Will Be One Of Haymitch's Most Painful Losses

Maysilee Donner becomes one of Haymitch's closest allies during the 50th Hunger Games. They spend much of the Games fighting together and looking out for each other, which makes one particular shot in the trailer pretty hard to miss once you know what happens to her.

For a split second, Maysilee is surrounded by the arena's strange, brightly colored birds. They swarm around her while she tries to get away, and the shot goes by quickly enough that it might not mean much to someone who has not read the book. Readers, however, will know exactly what they are looking at.

Near the end of the Games, Maysilee and Haymitch separate while they are among the final five tributes. Maysilee is attacked by the birds shortly afterward, and their sharp beaks pierce her neck. Haymitch finds her badly wounded and stays with her as she dies.

It is a very rough loss for Haymitch, because Maysilee is someone he has spent days fighting alongside. Haymitch may win the Games, but Sunrise on the Reaping makes it clear that victory is going to come at an enormous cost.
