The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued a group of fishermen, including a Ghanaian national, abducted by suspected sea pirates along the waterways of Ibeno Local Government Area.

The victims were rescued after police operatives engaged the suspected pirates in a gun duel around the maritime boundary between Akwa Ibom and Rivers states on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, made available to journalists in Uyo on Friday, the fishermen were attacked and abducted at about 7 am on September 30 while travelling towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The statement said personnel of the Asawana Mobile Police Base were mobilised following a distress report and subsequently encountered the suspected pirates.
