Nicolas Cage’s Blood-Soaked Horror Adaptation Officially Enters A New Streaming Era

A graduate of McMaster University, Ryan began his career in public relations before attending Vancouver Film School. There, he built lasting industry connections and optioned a feature film screenplay.

Nicolas Cage is no stranger to the horror genre. The National Treasure (2004) star has starred in a number of horror movies in recent years, including 2024's hit Longlegs, which saw him undergo a significant physical transformation to play that movie's bizarre villain. Prior to the viral Neon horror film, Cage appeared in horror movies like Mandy (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), and Willy's Wonderland (2021). Not all of Cage's ventures into scare territory have been successful, but at least one title is now experiencing a resurgence on digital.

Three years after it hit theaters, Renfield is now proving popular on Fandango. As of writing, the film ranks as the seventh most popular movie on the VOD platform, beating titles like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), and the original Ghostbusters (1984).

Cage's Renfield Is Taking A Bite Out Of Fandango For The First Time

Renfield's position on Fandango's top 10 chart marks a first for the movie, which also stars Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz. Directed by Chris McKay, the movie sees Cage playing Dracula himself, with Hoult playing Renfield, the legendary vampire's henchman who begins to wonder if there's a life outside of his job. The film blends horror with comedy and action, sporting an R rating for bloody violence, some gore, language throughout, and some drug use.

Though Renfield beats several notable movies on Fandango, it falls behind some top performers. Coming in ahead of the vampire movie are Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie (2026), Practical Magic 2 (2026), The Hunger Games (2012), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023). Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) currently occupies the number one spot after becoming a box office sensation this summer. Renfield may now be a VOD hit, but it didn't come close to achieving a level of box office success similar to the MCU film.

The Dracula Adaptation Failed To Give The Vampire New Life

Made on an estimated budget of $65 million, Renfield was a box office bomb, grossing just $26 million. Critically, the film also wasn't a major success, with reviews largely mixed from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a lackluster 58%, with some reviews stating that it doesn't effectively use its talented cast or explore its premise to the fullest, despite a wacky turn from Cage as Dracula. The Popcornmeter is higher at 78%, but this stronger audience sentiment evidently didn't result in a large turnout in theaters.

In the world of horror, Dracula remains a continued figure of interest, with new takes on the character arriving every few years. Recently, however, most have not been successful, with 2023 also seeing the release of The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a darker film that similarly failed commercially and critically. It remains to be seen how long Renfield's success will last on Fandango, but the movie is evidently finally finding more of an audience.
