Max Verstappen won the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on Sunday for his first win of the Formula 1 2026 season.

Verstappen, who took pole, finished ahead of Mercedes’s Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton, who finished second and third respectively.

It was Verstappen’s first race win since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2025, and a much-needed result in what has been a challenging season for the Red Bull driver.

Earlier, the start of the race was delayed for more than an hour after heavy rain hit the circuit. When the race finally got underway after conditions improved, there was high drama in the opening few laps.

Confronted with variable conditions, the 22 cars on the grid split their strategies between four different tyre compounds.

While Verstappen and the two Mercedes drivers opted for the safer, intermediate tyre, the Ferraris and the Mclarens took a gamble and went with the dry tyres.

The latter ultimately proved to be the wrong tyre choice, as the cars on the green inters made up a flurry of places early on in the race.

But once the track dried out, Verstappen, who was overtaken by the Mercedes drivers off the line at the start, overtook Antonelli and Russell to retake the lead and eventually win the race.

Behind the top three, Charles Leclerc came home in fourth, while Isack Hadjar finished fifth.

Mclaren’s Oscar Piastri finished sixth, and Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson finished seventh.
