Fahmi denies unity govt using courts, enforcement agencies to threaten Umno leaders

Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil has rejected claims by certain quarters that court action and enforcement agencies are being used to threaten Umno leaders.

Fahmi said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government administration have been consistent in not interfering in enforcement agencies, such as by initiating or halting investigations into any case, reported Berita Harian.

Citing the issues involving Lembaga Tabung Haji and Felda, he said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, had ordered that they be investigated thoroughly.

“That is not true (that court cases are being used to threaten Umno leaders).

“The matter was not stated by the prime minister or the party, but was an order from His Majesty … the government must uphold the King’s decree,” he said after an event in Kuala Lumpur.

Asked whether the issue could weaken cooperation within the government, Fahmi said he believed the current administration could continue to serve to the best of its ability until the end of its term.

Speaking at the Umno general assembly on Friday, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called for an end to the practice of using law enforcement agencies and national institutions as political tools.

Separately, Umno secretary general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party and its leaders have been facing “intimidation, slander, and malicious accusations”.

Although he did not specify who he was referring to, his comments came after several senior party leaders were charged with corruption offences.
