Superheroes don't just have a chokehold on movies and television. They reign over the likes of video games, too, and have for quite some time. Superhero movies have been making gamers happy since 1978, starting with the release of DC Comics' Superman for the Atari 2600. Marvel Comics has been bringing its characters to life since 1982, with its title, Spider-Man, also for the Atari 2600.
Marvel video games have come quite a long way since 1982, with some being among the best of the best when it comes to superhero games as a whole. While, yes, Spider-Man typically has the best Marvel Comics video games, there are other Marvel characters out there that bring amazing content to the table/console.
6 'Marvel: Ultimate Alliance' (2006)
What's better than a video game starring a fan-favorite Marvel character? A video game starring all of Marvel's top-tier characters—heroes and villains alike. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance takes almost the entire Marvel Comics universe and allows the player to build their own team of four characters to play through the events of the story. While there are more characters in the sequel, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, this first one is far better in plot—gameplay not changing much going into the second one, either.
Despite this, there are still 32 characters to play if one is counting the costume variants that become characters like Scarlet Spider (a Spider-Man (Quinton Flynn) costume variant). Having the ability to make whatever team they'd like gives players a sense of investment that not many other games do. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance also has a unique play style compared to other superhero games, taking on a top-down RPG style rather than a third-person action title.
5 'Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales' (2020)
After the release of the hit game, Marvel's Spider-Man in 2018, everyone was wondering what was going to come next for the iconic franchise. While Marvel's Spider-Man 2 wasn't planned for another handful of years, they gave gamers a spinoff sequel: Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales in 2020.
Taking place between the first game and the official sequel in 2023, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales follows the iconic, younger Spider-Man as he takes over the hero work in New York while Peter Parker (Yuri Lowenthal) goes out of the country to visit his girlfriend, Mary Jane (Laura Bailey). Miles Morales' (Nadji Jeter) character development in this project is phenomenal. Not only that, though, the gameplay is so much fun, with some even saying that it's more fun to play than Marvel's Spider-Man, thanks to Miles having different, more electric powers than Peter.
4 'Spider-Man: Web of Shadows' (2008)
What would happen if the entire world was infected by the horrific Symbiote alien race that created the one and only fan-favorite Spidey villain, Venom (Keith Szarabajka)? Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is the answer to that very question. When Venom takes over New York City with his army of Symbiotes, the world is plunged into chaos, and Spider-Man and the player alike have their morals and ethics put to the test. This game does quite a few things differently than any other game featuring the Wall-Crawler, setting it apart immediately.
Rather than being one singular story, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows decides to give players the chance to choose their own direction in the plot. With four different endings to choose from—based on how one acts in the game and whether they use the Symbiote—the player really gets to define their own journey here. This not only gives the game a lot of replayability, but also gets the player invested in a way not many others do. Not to forget, the combat mechanics in Spider-Man: Web of Shadows are still considered some of the best to this day. The aerial combat and the ability to fight whilst on a building wall come together to make an incredible combat experience for gamers.
Collider Exclusive · 8 Questions · 2 Minutes Which MCU Character Is Your Best Friend? Steve Rogers · Tony Stark · Peter Parker · Shuri
Pick where you meet, what they text you at two in the morning, what they hand you on your birthday and what the two of you keep arguing about. Four very different people are waiting on the other side: the one who never leaves, the one who is exhausting and worth it, the one who replies in four seconds flat, and the one who will roast you and then fix your life.
🛡️Steve Rogers(Captain America)
🛠️Tony Stark(Iron Man)
🕸️Peter Parker(Spider-Man)
🐆Shuri(Black Panther)
01
Where do the two of you meet? Nobody in this universe makes a friend somewhere normal.
02
Your phone lights up at two in the morning. What does it say? You find out what kind of friend somebody is by what they send at that hour.
03
It is your birthday. What do they hand you? The present is never really about the present.
04
What does a good Saturday with them actually look like? Superheroes have days off, and this is how they spend them.
05
You have your worst day in years. What do they do about it? This is the part of a friendship nobody puts in the trailer.
06
Every real friendship has one fight it keeps having. What is yours? The thing you argue about is usually the thing you like most about them.
07
The alarm goes off and you are both in the field. What is your job? You get one role on the team, and it says a lot about who you want next to you.
08
Ten years on, what do you want this friendship to be? Eight questions in, this is the one that decides who picks up the phone.
The Line Is Ringing Your Best Friend Is…
Four people, four completely different ideas of what it means to have somebody in your corner. Here is who picked up, what they would ask of you, and what you would get back.
Steve Rogers
You want the friend who does not leave. Steve is the one who turns up at the door without being asked, who remembers what you said you were worried about, and who has never once made you audition for his attention.
- His entire character is built on a single sentence, which is that he will not abandon somebody just because it has become expensive to keep them.
- He is far funnier than people give him credit for, and the joke is almost always at his own expense rather than yours.
- The friendship comes with a cost, since being close to Steve means being dragged into fights that were never yours and being glad about it later.
- You would get a friend who tells you the hard thing to your face and then defends you to everybody else in the room.
Tony Stark
You want the friend who is genuinely exhausting and completely worth it. Tony will forget your birthday, then build you something at four in the morning that you did not know you needed, and hand it over as though it were nothing.
- He is bad at saying the warm thing out loud, so he says it in hardware instead, which is why everybody around him ends up with upgraded everything.
- Being his friend means putting up with the disappearing, the deflecting and the jokes that arrive about ninety seconds too early.
- What you get in return is somebody who will spend an unreasonable amount of money and effort on a problem the moment it becomes yours.
- He is the loudest person in the room and the one most likely to be quietly panicking about all of you.
Peter Parker
You want the friend who replies in four seconds and apologises for it. Peter is earnest in a way that is almost unfashionable, and he will take on far more than he can carry rather than admit that he is struggling.
- He is the only one on this list who needs looking after as much as he looks after you, and that balance is exactly what makes it a real friendship.
- Nobody in the MCU is better at the small stuff, from remembering the thing you were nervous about to showing up with food you did not ask for.
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in July 2026 and put him back where he works best, which is broke, local and carrying the weight on his own.
- You would get a friend who is sincerely, embarrassingly happy for you when something goes right, with no edge to it at all.
Shuri
You want the friend who insults your shoes, fixes your phone and then quietly rearranges your entire life for the better. Shuri does not do soft reassurance, and that is the reason you would believe her when she says you are fine.
- She is the smartest person in almost any room she walks into and treats that as a reason to tease you rather than a reason to lecture you.
- The teasing is the affection. When Shuri stops making fun of you, something has gone seriously wrong and you should probably ask her about it.
- Her story is the one on this list that goes somewhere genuinely dark, which is what turned her from a scene stealer into the emotional centre of the films.
- You would get a friend who never pities you, never softens the truth, and never once lets you take yourself too seriously.
3 'Guardians of the Galaxy' (2021)
Ever since the debut of their hit film franchise in 2014, this team of Marvel underdogs has finally gotten the recognition they deserve, and it continued with the likes of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021—their very own video game. Much like said film franchise, this title had so much heart and soul put into it, and it's clear through the quality of the game. Unfortunately, it fell by the wayside for many, thanks to the terrible reception of the studio's other Marvel game, Marvel's Avengers. However, this title was far better in every single way.
Taking a more comic-accurate approach to the Guardians than other iterations in the modern age, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is a super fun, entertaining, thrilling, and well-performed adventure through the cosmic side of the Marvel Comics universe. This game took home plenty of awards, like 2021's Best Narrative at The Game Awards, 2021's Best Single-Player Game at the Golden Issue Awards, and 2022's Game of the Year at The Canadian Game Awards, just to name a few. The time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears put into making Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy amazing are undeniable.
2 'Spider-Man 2' (2004)
There are few superhero movies more beloved and held in high regard than the likes of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. It's consistently known as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made, and continues to be brought up in the conversation decades later. The same can also be said about its video game counterpart, too. Spider-Man 2, the video game, is one of the best superhero video games out there—as many would tell you.
Spider-Man 2 is most commonly noted for its amazing web-swinging. This was one of the first Spidey games to utilize genuine physics to bring the swinging action to life. Webs actually attached to buildings! Some still regard the swinging here to be the best in any game centering around the Web-Slinger. The studio also managed to get a lot of the film cast back to portray their roles in the video game, which was a neat touch and helps the player feel more and more like this is a true variant timeline of the movie.
1 'Marvel's Spider-Man' (2018)
It's hard to be on superhero internet without seeing a boatload of people claiming that Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the greatest superhero games of all time. Often called the Batman: Arkham City but for Spider-Man, it has received some of the highest praise one can get as a superhero game. The developer, Insomniac Games, put loads of effort into making sure that this felt like the definitive Spidey experience a gamer could have. It's safe to say that they pretty much succeeded at that all across the board.
This title goes all-in on giving said experience not just in the gameplay, but in the story, as well. The script behind Marvel's Spider-Man is one of the best Spider-Man stories out there, bringing the best of the best when it comes to taking inspiration from comics, movies, and television, while introducing all-new special aspects to them. Not to forget, Yuri Lowenthal gives one of the best Peter Parker performances out there, solidifying him as one of the best actors to play the character, period.
