Pokémon Black & White Finally Return In New Remaster

Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

Launching back in 2010 as the first installments in the fifth generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version became yet another commercial success for the franchise, despite falling victim to reviews criticizing their lack of ambition. However, it seems as though those reviews made little impact as, two years later, sequels Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2 arrived for the Nintendo DS.

Now, well over a decade later, Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version are back in a surprising new release, and will allow players to experience the older entries with widescreen, 4K and 60fps support.

This news comes courtesy of The Gaming Emporium over on Twitter/X, who has drawn our attention to the Pokémon DS Widescreen mod, which aims to bring a total of seven classic Pokémon games to the modern age courtesy of the aforementioned widescreen, 4K and 60fps support. As such, the following seven Nintendo DS Pokémon games will be available to play in just one launcher:

  • Pokémon Black
  • Pokémon White
  • Pokémon Black 2
  • Pokémon White 2
  • Pokémon HeartGold
  • Pokémon SoulSilver
  • Pokémon Platinum

All adapted for a single widescreen display, which eliminates the need for dual DS screens, these seven entries will allow battles, menus, Pokémon management, and touchscreen controls to all be accessible on a single display. Not only that, but players can also utilize controller support, the ability to fast-forward, and individual game saves courtesy of the all-in-one launcher.

The only catch here is that this mod does not include the games themselves. As such, you will need to already own compatible Pokémon DS ROMs. As The Gaming Emporium explains, "The project uses an integrated melonDS emulator with custom widescreen rendering and game-specific interface modifications. The 60 FPS presentation uses interpolated frames; the original games' 3D logic still runs at 30 FPS."

However, with the mod offering up to 4K resolution on PC, 16:9 widescreen gameplay, a smooth 60fps presentation, and Windows, Linux, Steam Deck, and modded Switch support, it is one of the most accessible ones around, and better yet, it is all free to download without the need for compiling.

As you can imagine, this is a big moment for Pokémon fans, especially those who are fans of some of the more classic titles. As such, many took to the comments to share their thoughts on the arrival of the Pokémon DS Widescreen mod.

"Nice, now I only need the same for the 3DS," one user commented. "Don't have much hope for it though." Another shared, "Dude, it turned out insane. I'm testing it now. Congrats on the project. Holy s*it..." One Switch user was a happy customer, adding, "Tried it on Switch Lite. Damn, it's beautiful. Working great without lag. Thank you, kind stranger."

So, if you miss the days of Nintendo DS Pokémon entries, look no further than the Pokémon DS Widescreen mod, which will allow you to experience them all over again, but without any of the issues you may have run into back in the day.
