Middlesex seek legal advice after admin blunder rules du Plooy out for rest of season

Middlesex have been forced to leave captain Leus du Plooy out of their squad for the remainder of the season - including their first List A final since 1990 - after inadvertently jeopardising his status as a local player through an embarrassing administrative error.

Du Plooy, the 31-year-old middle-order batter, is South African-born but has played as a local player in county cricket for several years thanks to his Hungarian passport and had previously expressed his desire to play international cricket for England.

His Middlesex contract included the 2027 season, but the club announced on Sunday morning that he would leave at the end of this summer after declaring his ambition to play for South Africa, which would have forced them to re-register him as an overseas player for the final year of his deal.

However, the club were unaware that, under ECB regulations, du Plooy's declaration automatically rendered him ineligible to continue playing as a local player for the rest of the 2026 season. While they had a vacant spot in their squad for one, they did not realise their mistake until after Sunday's deadline to register overseas players for this season.

Middlesex said on Tuesday that they are still talking to the ECB and the Professional Cricketers' Association about du Plooy's status, but he did not feature in the playing XI named to face Durham in the County Championship this week, with Max Holden instead deputising as captain.

Middlesex sit fourth in Division Two of the Championship, 38 points off the second promotion place, but could win their first white-ball trophy in 18 years next weekend when they face Leicestershire in the Metro Bank Cup final at Trent Bridge.

Du Plooy has not featured in their run to the final due to his involvement in the Hundred with Manchester Super Giants. He would, however, have been available for selection for the final on September 20, but for Middlesex's error.

The club said in a statement on Tuesday morning: "Middlesex Cricket can confirm that captain Leus du Plooy will be unable to play for the club for the remainder of the 2026 season following clarification of his playing registration status under ECB regulations.

"Last week, following an article in the press, the club confirmed that Leus had declared his intention to pursue an opportunity to play international cricket for South Africa. The club has now been made aware that, under ECB regulations, a player who has declared an intention to play for another country is classified as an overseas player for domestic cricket purposes.

"As a result, Leus is required to be registered as an overseas player in order to continue playing for Middlesex. The deadline for the registration of overseas players for the 2026 season was Sunday, 6 September, meaning that it is now not possible for the club to register Leus and select him for the remainder of the season."
