Philippine authorities are looking upgrade its capabilities in monitoring the country’s backdoors, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said on Wednesday.

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla admitted that border control has been a problem to the Philippines.

“We are upgrading our capacity, upgrading our technology, and upgrading our monitoring in order to better protect our borders,” he said during a press conference during the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC)

“That is an internal security matter that we are taking up in order to strengthen our backdoor. It has been a point of concern,” he added.

Remulla said they are now procuring “better enforcement tools” to better monitor backdoors.

“But what we are doing is enhancing the capacity of the Philippine Coast Guard, the PNP, and the other agencies, the BID, in order to prevent that from happening,” he added.

Remulla also noted that the issue on backdoors is a complicated one.

“So, thinking that there is a simple solution to a complicated problem makes it a simplistic affair. But it is not. It is very complicated,” he said.

The DILG chief’s latest statements came after a day after he said that businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang, the alleged mastermind in the disappearances of several sabungeros, is already left the country via backdoor.

Remulla said that the matter on extradition treaty was discussed during the AMMTC.

“But the expedition was discussed as one of the weapons in order to combat transnational crimes... It was discussed openly. It will be adopted in the ASEAN forum next month with all the heads of state,” he said. —VAL, GMA News
