‘Obsession’ director’s cut is 20 minutes longer than original, says Curry Barker

The director of Obsession, Curry Barker, has said he’d like to release an extended cut of his hit horror movie with 20 minutes of extra footage.

Written and directed by Barker, Obsession was released earlier this year and has gone on to become one of the highest-grossing independent films ever. Made on a budget of $750,000, it has now grossed over $525million at the global box office.

Discussing a potential alternate cut of the film, Barker told Rolling Stone: “I think I’m pretty happy with the cut right now. There’s not things I would change with the footage that I have. But I would say there’s a longer version of the movie that I would love to release for sure.”

Continuing, Barker said that he has “like 20 minutes” of additional footage in the can, but reiterated that the existing version of Obsession should be seen as the director’s cut. “I did what I wanted for the most part,” he added.

Barker’s film is a riff on the “monkey-paw” horror subgenre in which Inde Navarrette’s character Nikki becomes fixated on Michael Johnston’s Bear after his wish goes wrong.

Navarrette, the film’s breakout star, has recently said she is “totally open” to making a sequel should Barker choose to devise one.

She went on to say what she thought Nikki would be doing after the credits roll on Obsession. “I think the non-pretty answer, which I think is more important to give sometimes than kind of just giggling through answers, is she’s starting a grief process,” the actress said.

“When things happen that are completely out of our control, like losing a loved one, losing a parent, losing autonomy, having an experience that wasn’t your fault, it’s very difficult to understand anything. She’s just starting the grief process.”
