Spider-Noir Is Back As Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Finally Returns

Unfortunately for Spider-Man fans, Spider-Noir has been canceled after one season due to budget concerns. This lone season was thankfully an open-and-closed case story on its own, but it’s obviously disappointing that we won’t be seeing more of Nicolas Cage’s phenomenal Spider-Man. And, for anyone who has been desperate to see more adaptations of this particular alternate-universe Spider-Man since Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, this news will be doubly heartbreaking.

Spider-Man Noir being reprised for a Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions sequel, much less a brand-new, original Spider-Verse game, would be excellent. Spider-Man Noir is undoubtedly the most unique character in the game, between himself, Amazing Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Spider-Man 2099, with his gameplay revolving almost wholly around stealth.

The game’s Spider-Man Noir is decidedly more dark and gloomy than Spider-Noir, which embraces the humor and campiness that the character evokes in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and anyone who is itching for more Spider-Man Noir has a fairly accessible way to play it today.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Is Back In A Big Way

A few months ago, user TiredAndOnFire shared their latest recompilation project: Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, playable and updated for modern PCs and Steam Deck-compatible. As something of an unofficial Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions remaster, it’s terrific to have a repackaged way to finally play this spectacular Spider-Man game on modern hardware.

Fans still have the option to play Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions on its original hardware (Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii), but only if they have any of these consoles, and only if they are able to miraculously find a copy of the game for their platform of choice, of course. TiredAndOnFire’s work truly strives for abandonware preservation, as they describe it, and it’s efforts like this that may ensure some of the best Spider-Man games are never lost to obscurity and become virtually inaccessible.

16 years later, Spider-Man Noir has barely scratched the surface of how successful the character ought to be. Multiverses and Spider-Verses have become ridiculously oversaturated, and yet, for Spider-Man Noir to be put on a pedestal and have a TV show is proof that this version of the character broke the mold profoundly. Maybe not enough, though, as it seems.

There was even a Spider-Man Noir comic book miniseries that was released in an attempt to synergize with the show, but a Spider-Man Noir video game that behaves like a spiritual successor or sequel to Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions would probably remind many fans where they fell in love with him in the first place.

Marvel Owes Everything To Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

Now, you could claim that Spider-Man Noir is only popular nowadays because of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is probably one of the only reasons why a Nicolas Cage-led, live-action Spider-Man Noir TV series would’ve been greenlit, after all. Still, it was Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions that publicized Earth-90214’s 1930s Peter Parker, following the character’s incredible Marvel Comics debut a couple of years earlier.

The sumptuous Great Depression-era New York City that Spider-Man Noir inhabits deserves a game all to itself. However, it could admittedly be tiring to play a 10–30-hour game in the same blackness and shadow, especially when activating spider-senses further plunges players into darkness, and the vibrant color palettes every other Spider-Man’s levels possess make for a lovely reprieve, contributing to how visually dynamic Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is.

That said, Spider-Noir bears a solution. When launching and selecting a New Game save file, players could get to choose whether they’d like to start the game in a black-and-white filter or in full color, and then be able to swap back and forth at their discretion mid-playthrough or in New Game Plus. Until Spider-Man Noir makes another video game appearance, you can at least look forward to him in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and enjoy a recompiled ‘remaster’ of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
