Donovan Marx attack: US SLAMS ‘Kill the Boer’ chant

Translate

The United States has renewed its demand for South Africa to condemn the controversial ‘Kill the Boer’ chant following the brutal farm attack on North West farmer Donovan Marx.

The US State Department accused South African politicians of putting Afrikaner lives at risk through racial incitement after two violent attacks in North West in October.

According to a Fox News report published on Saturday, 31 October, a State Department spokesperson said politicians who incite race-based violence had endangered Afrikaners and their property.

Washington specifically raised the singing of ‘Kill the Boer, Kill the Farmer’, demanding stronger action from the South African government.

The comments follow the attack on Marx, 50, who was shot, stabbed and had both ears cut off on his farm near Ventersdorp on Wednesday, 28 October.

US puts pressure on Ramaphosa

The State Department said President Donald Trump’s administration had repeatedly called on South African officials to condemn racial incitement.

Washington also wants rural crime formally designated as a priority crime.

The spokesperson criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s government for what Washington considers an inadequate response to its concerns.

The US also raised objections to South Africa’s race-based economic policies and called for alternatives to certain Black Economic Empowerment ownership requirements.

The latest criticism adds to tensions between Washington and Pretoria over farm attacks and the treatment of Afrikaners.

However, investigators have not established that the attack on Marx was racially motivated or linked to the controversial chant.

Ian Cameron condemns brutality

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police chairperson Ian Cameron also condemned the attacks.

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Cameron described the assault on Marx as involving “extraordinary cruelty”.

He called for experienced investigators, forensic specialists and crime intelligence to be deployed to investigate violent farm attacks.

Cameron also highlighted the killing of Hannetjie van Zyl, 55, who was beaten to death during a separate attack in North West earlier in October.

He warned that rural communities required effective policing and stronger investigative resources.

Police arrest TWO suspects

Meanwhile, North West police arrested two suspects on Saturday in connection with the attack on Marx.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams confirmed the arrests following an intensive investigation.

Police also recovered Marx’s stolen bakkie, which was found abandoned in Ikageng near Potchefstroom.

Investigators are pursuing outstanding suspects.

Marx remains in hospital recovering from severe injuries. His family confirmed on Saturday that surgeons could not save his ears.
