The Star Wars franchise has featured several Mandalorian characters in canon, with each one belonging to their own unique clan, house, or group. Mandalorians may all wear beskar armor, but that doesn't mean they're all the same, as indicated by their unique symbols and coloring. Each faction has its own history and ideals it strives towards, and Mandalore has a long history of clans fighting against each other.

This theme has continued throughout The Mandalorian, with Din Djarin discovering that he's just one of many different kinds of Mandalorians, and Bo-Katan recognize that every clan would be stronger together. These different Mandalorian factions create a vibrant society that grows and evolves through each era of Star Wars canon. From the Mandalorian Civil Wars to the rebellion against the Empire, each Mandalorian clan has played a different role, adapting to new circumstances and changing loyalties as needed.

The amount of variety also makes for compelling character arcs, as each clan member must ask themselves what it really means to be a Mandalorian, and what future is best for Mandalore. The Mandalorian will continue to explore these ideas, and the different Mandalorian factions are central to this narrative's ongoing development.

It is worth noting that, despite being the most famous characters to don the Mandalorian armor, Boba Fett and his father Jango are not technically Mandalorians, but bounty hunters. Jango was adopted as a child on Mandalore and fought in the Mandalorian civil war, earning the armor he later passed on to his son. Importantly, neither Jango nor Boba adheres to Mandalorian conduct laid out in The Mandalorian. While some still debate this, they have not been included in this overview.

Death Watch

The first Mandalorian faction to be shown in Star Wars canon, the Mandalorian Death Watch, was a group of terrorists who appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They were opposed to Duchess Satine Kryze's pacifist government, and so they were banished to the Mandalorian moon of Concordia, where they began planning to take control of Mandalore.

They teamed up with Count Dooku and the separatists before being betrayed, and later worked with Maul and the Shadow Collective to overthrow Duchess Satine. Although they were successful, Death Watch ended up splitting into two factions, igniting a new civil war on Mandalore.

Children Of The Watch

The Children of the Watch was the faction of Din Djarin, though they were not named until The Mandalorian season 2. According to Bo-Katan, they were "a cult of religious zealots that broke away from Mandalorian society," seeking to reestablish the ancient way of the Mand'alor.

This included practices such as swearing the Mandalorian Creed, vowing never to remove one's helmet in front of others, and the Children of the Watch frequently affirmed their vows by chanting "This is the way." While other Mandalorian clans looked down on them, Bo-Katan came to understand their sense of honor, and the Children of the Watch agreed to work with other Mandalorians.

New Mandalorians

In complete opposition to traditional Mandalorians, Duchess Satine and the New Mandalorians were dedicated to peace and pacifism. Satine lost most of her people because of the Mandalorian Civil Wars, causing her aversion to violence, and she swore to change Mandalore after taking the throne.

While her efforts were successful for a time, groups like Death Watch refused to leave Mandalore's warrior past behind. Her desire to stay out of the Clone Wars also limited trade with the wider galaxy, leading to widespread corruption within her government. Satine was eventually killed by Maul, and her sister Bo-Katan swore to avenge her and reclaim Mandalore.

House Vizsla

House Vizsla was one of the most powerful Mandalorian factions, having once ruled all of Mandalore. The earliest known member was Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order, who created the legendary Darksaber. During the fall of the Old Republic, members of House Vizsla snuck into the Jedi Temple and stole the blade following Tarre Vizsla's death, using it to unite all of Mandalore.

The blade passed down to Pre Vizsla, leader of Death Watch, who was killed in combat by Maul. The last known members of House Vizsla were Paz Vizsla and his son Ragnar, who were part of the Children of the Watch.

House Kryze

Bo-Katan and Duchess Satine were members of House Kryze, which once served as the royal family of the Mandalorians. House Kryze is based on Kalevala, where Bo-Katan was raised, and they continued to lead Mandalore throughout the Clone Wars. However, after the Mandalorian Civil Wars, Duchess Satine established the New Mandalorian government, and all who refused to abandon their warrior heritage were banished.

The Kryze sisters found themselves on opposing sides for many years, with Bo-Katan joining Pre Vizsla's Death Watch, until Bo-Katan vowed to reclaim Mandalore and avenge her sister's death.

House Kast

House Kast was one of the Mandalorian factions that swore allegiance to Bo-Katan Kryze in the Star Wars Rebels season 4 premiere. Clan Rook was part of this house, and two Mandalorians, Rook Kast and Veraslayn Kast, would seem to be members, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Clan Wren

The most notable Mandalorian faction in Star Wars Rebels was Clan Wren, thanks to the character of Sabine Wren. A member of the Ghost crew, Sabine's Mandalorian past was initially shrouded in mystery, with more details confirmed as time went on. Her family chose to stand with the Empire, causing Sabine to leave, and Clan Wren was put in a precarious position for a long time.

However, Sabine convinced her family to fight back against the Empire, later convincing the other Mandalorian clans to do the same. This led to the return of Bo-Katan Kryze, who accepted the Darksaber and agreed to rule Mandalore once again.

Clan Saxon

Clan Saxon was part of House Vizsla and was led by Gar Saxon during the Clone Wars and the reign of the Empire. Gar Saxon was a member of Death Watch who sided with Maul, serving him until Bo-Katan's victory during the Siege of Mandalore. However, they later controlled the planet with the Empire's support, causing many Mandalorians to view Clan Saxon as traitors.

Following Gar Saxon's death at the hands of Ursa Wren, a civil war broke out between Clan Saxon and Clan Wren, and Tiber Saxon took his brother's place. Tiber was eventually killed when Sabine destroyed "the Duchess" superweapon, causing other Mandalorian clans to unite under Bo-Katan.

Clan Eldar

Clan Eldar was another Mandalorian clan that pledged loyalty to Bo-Katan and joined the Mandalorian resistance against the Empire. Their armor was a combination of black, dark green, and orange, with the signet of a leonid creature. Some members later joined the Children of the Watch following the Great Purge of Mandalore.

Clan Rook

Clan Rook was a vassal of House Kast, and they too joined Bo-Katan and the Mandalorian resistance. This clan's armor was purple, yellow, and silver, sharing the same signet as House Kast. The Mandalorians Rook Kast shares a name with each group, though it is still unconfirmed if she is part of Clan Rook.
