Inside Lena Dunham, Kim Kardashian & More Celebrity Surrogacy Journeys

The Girls creator announced in a new essay for Vogue that she and husband Luis Felber have welcomed a daughter via surrogate.
While Dunham always knew she wanted to be a mom, her plans for starting a family evolved after her ongoing battle with endometriosis led her to undergo a hysterectomy at the age of 31.
“In the moment, my pain was so overriding I put those other thoughts aside and it was only in the aftermath of the surgery that I started to feel the weight of what had happened,” the actress, now 40, told Today in April. "Some people don’t dream about being mothers, but I had and it was a big part of my identity was that I was going to do that someday and in this way."
But "the amazing thing is, since then, I have met so many people who have built their families in so many different ways,” she continued. “I’ve really come to a place where I feel really excited. In whatever way it happens, I will feel so grateful.”
It’s a sentiment Kim Kardashian shared when she and then-husband Kanye “Ye” West welcomed daughter Chicago West, 8, and son Psalm West, 7, with the help of a surrogate after she endured difficult pregnancies and delivering to bring eldest children North West, 13, and Saint West, 10, into the world.
"Honestly, when it’s done, I think it was the best decision I’ve ever made," she added. “I think it was such an amazing experience. I would recommend it for anyone. I am the biggest fan of surrogacy.”

However, everyone’s journey with surrogacy is different. And Olivia Munn admitted she initially had some concerns about not being able to carry her and now-husband John Mulaney’s 2-year-old daughter Méi. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 less than two years after they welcomed 4-year-old son Malcolm, the actress suffered side effects from her hormone-suppressing medication that ultimately led her to have her ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes removed.
“I think the most surprising part about the surrogacy journey was that the sadness I felt from not being able to carry my daughter really dissipated once all of my hopes and dreams were placed into this other woman and I knew that she was really kind and cared so much," The Newsroom alum told Self in 2025, "I just sat in my gratitude instead of living in any fear or sadness or concern."
