Meerut shocker: Woman, 20-year-old lover convicted of murdering husband and staging snakebite death with live cobra

Meerut court convicted Ravita Kashyap and Amar Deep for the murder of Amit Kashyap.

MEERUT: A Meerut court on Wednesday convicted a 28-year-old woman and her 20-year-old lover of murdering her husband and planting a live snake under his body to make it appear that he had died of a snakebite.

The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence at the next hearing on Oct 16.Additional sessions judge Jayveer Singh Nagar (ADJ-12) held Ravita Kashyap and Amar Deep, residents of Akbarpur Sadat, Meerut, guilty of killing Amit Kashyap (31), who was found dead on his bed on the morning of April 13, 2025.According to police, a live poisonous snake was found trapped beneath his body, while 10 apparent snakebite marks were noticed on him.

Ravita initially claimed that her husband had died after being bitten by the snake. The postmortem, however, established that Amit had died of asphyxia and not snakebite. According to the autopsy report and the testimony of Dr Kapil Garg, Amit’s mouth and nose had been pressed and his neck compressed. The pressure had also fractured his hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage.Amit’s brother, Monu, lodged an FIR under BNS section 103(1) (murder) and 61(2)(a) (criminal conspiracy) based on the postmortem findings. Police filed the chargesheet on June 26, 2025.Police said Amar bought the snake from a snake charmer for Rs 1,000, claiming it was needed for a religious gathering. The snake charmer later testified as a prosecution witness. The prosecution examined 12 witnesses in the case.
