Dozens of fake Smart IDs seized in Johannesburg raid

Police in Johannesburg have uncovered an alleged operation producing fraudulent South African Smart ID cards, with dozens of cards and a card-printing machine seized during a raid.

The operation took place in the Hillbrow policing precinct after police received information about a man allegedly recruiting people who wanted South African Smart IDs, as well as forged bank statements and payslips.

22 blank Smart IDs seized

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers verified the information before conducting an operation in the area on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.

The search resulted in the seizure of:

• Six South African Smart ID cards
• 22 blank South African Smart ID cards
• A laptop
• A Smart ID card-printing machine

A Zimbabwean national was subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged operation.

Police said he is expected to appear in court soon.

Investigation is still underway

The investigation has not yet been concluded, with police continuing to look into the alleged manufacture and distribution of fraudulent identity documents.

It is also not yet clear how many people may have obtained fraudulent documents through the operation or what the alleged documents were intended to be used for, or even how the Zimbabwean national came into possession of a card printing machine.

SAPS has warned members of the public against becoming involved in the manufacture or acquisition of fraudulent identity documents and other forged documentation.

The warning comes as authorities continue to crack down on the illegal production and use of South African identity documents.

SAPS has urged anyone with information about illegal activities in their area to come forward.
