Both sides entered in dire form. Venezia, newly promoted and managed by survival specialist Davide Nicola (appointed mid-October after Giovanni Stroppa’s departure), had taken just one win all season—an upset over Napoli in Nicola’s debut—before losing their next three without scoring.
They had lost nine of their first 10 league games, one of the worst starts in Serie A history, with only six goals scored and a high concession rate.
Udinese were also in freefall: seven losses in their last eight matches (including a 5-2 home thrashing by Roma), leading to the sacking of Kosta Runjaic.
Ex-Venezia coach Paolo Zanetti took charge for his first game, facing his former club. Udinese had scored just 11 goals while conceding 23 in 10 games.
Despite the win Venezia, on six points, remain in the relegation zone while Udinese WBO have five points are bottom in the league table.
