Taylor Sheridan's 2027 Sicario Replacement Is Bringing Back One Of The Best Parts Of Yellowstone

Taylor Sheridan is headed back to the big screen with a Sicario-esque action thriller in 2027 that features one of Yellowstone's coolest stars. Sheridan might be the king of television right now, but he first broke through with his movie scripts. His American Frontier trilogy - made up of Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River - were all critically acclaimed Neo-Westerns that made him one of the hottest writers around.

Despite making such a big splash with movies, Sheridan hasn't directed since his Die Hard meets Punisher thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead in 2021. Instead, his work on the small screen with the Yellowstone TV franchise, Lioness, The Madison and so on has taken the bulk of his time. That looks set to change, as he is set to co-write Peter Berg's upcoming Call of Duty adaptation.

Sheridan has also dusted off a previously unmade screenplay called F.A.S.T. Initially set to be produced back in 2018, this action thriller involves a retired Delta Force operator tasked by the DEA to wipe out drug dealers operating in his hometown. The movie will be helmed by regular Sheridan collaborator Ben Richardson, with a cast that includes LaKeith Stanfield, Jason Clarke and 1923's Brandon Sklenar.

While Sklenar had a healthy career before playing Spencer Dutton in 1923, this career has truly taken off in the years since. Sklenar brought a brooding charisma to the Yellowstone prequel as the traumatized war vet, but he also gave Spencer a heart and vulnerability too. In short, he was incredibly convincing during the fight sequences or shootouts, but he sure could dial up the swoon-worthy romance during his scenes with Julia Schlaepfer's Alexandra too.

He was the prequel's breakout star and was quickly snapped up for movies like The Housemaid, Drop, and It Ends with Us. Sklenar has the potential to become a full-fledged leading man, and it feels like Sheridan is giving him his first major shot with the lead in F.A.S.T. Sheridan often excels with character-driven thrillers, though it sounds like this new film has more in common with the military action of Lioness than his past Neo-Westerns.

F.A.S.T. Is A Long Overdue Return To Action Thriller Movies For Taylor Sheridan

It will be cool to see how Sklenar handles his first big solo movie - but what's more exciting is that F.A.S.T. represents a belated return to films for its screenwriter. Sheridan's best scripts tend to be both tightly constructed and filled with compelling characters and dialogue, and by all accounts, F.A.S.T. is very much in that vein.

Some of his shows (such as Yellowstone's final seasons) can feel padded or lacking in momentum in order to suit an episode count, but that's something his movies can't be accused of. Even Those Who Wish Me Dead, which underperformed upon release, is finally starting to find an audience five years later on streaming. It's a great example of the type of lean, emotional actioners that represent Sheridan at his best.

There is an alternate universe where Sheridan became the modern equivalent of a filmmaker like Walter Hill (48 Hrs, The Driver), but the streaming world took his career down a different path. In one sense, it's a pity Sheridan isn't directing F.A.S.T. also, but given his schedule, that's not a surprise either. Having two big films on the horizon at least signals that Sheridan is yearning for the days of being able to wrap up a story within a two-hour runtime.

It will also be interesting to see how F.A.S.T. is received by audiences. Sheridan's TV empire couldn't be much bigger, but he's been away from films for a long time now. If it hits, perhaps Sheridan will find the motivation to step back behind the camera for another project in the vein of Wind River, and that can only be a good thing.
