Steam Officially Makes 2024 RPG 100% Free To Keep Forever

Steam has quietly dropped the price tag off an indie gem, and this time there’s no timer ticking down. A lovely story-rich RPG is now available for free on the platform, with developer Peremett-Studio confirming that it’s being made free-to-play permanently from September 28 onwards.

That makes Facing the Rain a little different from the usual Steam giveaways that ask players to claim a game before a deadline because it’s either a weekend promotion or a 100% discount offer that disappears after a few weeks. Besides, the developer has also confirmed support would continue for major bugs or technical problems.

What Is Facing the Rain On Steam About?

For anyone who missed the game when it launched, Facing the Rain arrived on Steam in December 2024. As for the plot, it puts players in the shoes of Billy, a young woman starting her first job as a hotel maid in the fictional town of Drumberg. Well, it doesn’t take long for her to realize that her workplace is a bit… strange. There is a heavy atmosphere around the hotel and its residents, and Billy gradually discovers that there’s more going on than she initially realizes.

More interestingly, Facing the Rain is an RPG without traditional battles. Instead of spending your time fighting enemies, the game revolves around dialogue, exploration, puzzles, and decisions. In fact, the official description lists it as a story-driven RPG where your actions really affect how the plot unfolds.

The choice-based approach is also tied to multiple endings. What Billy does during her time in Drumberg can change where the story eventually lands, giving players a reason to think about their choices instead of simply clicking through conversations to reach the next objective.

The setting is presented in a 2D pixel-art style, with the hotel, the surrounding town, and a strange metaphorical forest all available to explore. Players can interact with different characters and objects, with the game using small puzzles and conversations to gradually reveal what is happening beneath the surface.

There’s No Deadline to Grab This Free Steam RPG

Trust me when I say, the story is much more serious than what its cute pixel-art presentation might suggest. Facing the Rain deals with themes including grief and depression, while also leaving room for more positive ideas. It sets a pretty different tone from the combat-heavy RPGs that usually dominate Steam’s role-playing category. Also, it's a short RPG game: you can complete it in roughly two to three hours, so this is the sort of experience you can finish in a single evening (or a couple of) rather than committing an entire month to.

Facing the Rain is a single-player game, an excellent experience for anyone looking for a quiet, cozy time with your gaming PC. And yes, it has controller support too. You can always have your friends join you on Discord and stream the game—it’s fun to watch too. There are 15 Steam achievements to grab here, so I can already think of multiple reasons why you’d want to chase completion.
