Star Wars' Luke Skywalker Replacement Is Officially Back

Disney's replacement for Luke Skywalker in Star Wars is finally back, and he's just four months away from his next appearance. Luke Skywalker is the beating heart and soul of Star Wars, and he's one of the best Star Wars characters ever created. The hero of the original trilogy and the center of the entire Skywalker saga of Star Wars movies, Luke is the single most important person in the entire franchise.

Despite his importance, Disney and Lucasfilm have tried to offer new characters who fill Luke's role for some time now. Rey Skywalker famously led the sequel trilogy as its protagonist and acted as Luke's last student. Ahsoka Tano, as well, has become one of the most prominent Jedi in the galaxy during the part of the Star Wars timeline immediately following Return of the Jedi.

Both Rey and Ahsoka can't perfectly fill Luke's shoes, however. Rey's story is just beginning, as upcoming Star Wars movies will hopefully give her more to do in the aftermath of The Rise of Skywalker. Ahsoka, meanwhile, completely missed the Galactic Civil War and wasn't present for the sequels. Star Wars does have a legitimate replacement for Luke Skywalker, though, and he's finally making a comeback in Ahsoka season 2.

Ezra Bridger Was Disney's First Luke Skywalker Replacement Before Rey

Before Rey led the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Ezra Bridger was Disney's first replacement for Luke Skywalker. Disney's first Star Wars project, the animated series Star Wars Rebels, introduced Ezra as a young new Jedi and the new hero of the Rebellion, two roles Luke filled in the original trilogy. Like Luke, Ezra was a bold and brash young man who wanted to see more of the galaxy, and as Rebels went on, he also grew into a wise Jedi who accepted his responsibilities just like Luke.

Luke and Ezra even have similar plot beats in their stories. Both of their respective Jedi masters, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Kanan Jarrus, die noble deaths to save others, inspiring their padawans to grow in the Force. Both of them traipse across the galaxy with ragtag groups of rebels, and both accomplish some truly amazing things for the Rebellion; in Ezra's case, he helps save Mon Mothma, he thwarts Grand Admiral Thrawn, and he liberates Lothal. Both even fight Darth Vader at different points and walk away with their lives.

Ezra Bridger is very clearly similar to Luke, both in their stories and in the kinds of characters they are within the larger Star Wars franchise. Both of them are young viewers' windows into the galaxy far, far away. Ezra, however, hasn't been around much since the ending of Star Wars Rebels, as he took Thrawn into a faraway galaxy. While Ezra did appear in Ahsoka season 1, season 2 will be where he makes his full comeback to Star Wars.

Ezra Bridger Is Finally Back In The Star Wars Galaxy For Ahsoka Season 2

Now, in Ahsoka season 2, Disney and Lucasfilm are finally ready to bring their best replacement for Luke Skywalker back in full force. As the ending of Ahsoka season 1 already established, Ezra made it back into the main Star Wars galaxy by stowing away aboard Thrawn's ship. He's finally back in the Star Wars galaxy, and as the trailer for Ahsoka season 2 already hinted, he's going to join the New Republic in the fight against Thrawn.

For the first time in years, both in the real world and in the Star Wars timeline, Ezra Bridger is back and ready to fill Luke's role once again. While he almost certainly won't be training the next generation of Jedi or fighting any Sith, he will have to fight Grand Admiral Thrawn, who has openly declared his intent to reinstate the Galactic Empire. With Ahsoka and Sabine stranded on Peridea, as well, Ezra will likely be the only Jedi left to stand against the Imperial Remnants, just as Luke did years prior.

Ezra's status as a replacement for Luke and his return in Ahsoka season 2 is also exciting for another reason. Luke never really got a chance to be a fully-developed Jedi on-screen in Star Wars canon. He's already an old man in the sequel trilogy, and he only briefly pops up in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Most of that was unavoidable, as Star Wars never got around to making sequels until Mark Hamill was in his mid-sixties, and most of his sequel story played out in the Expanded Universe's books and comics.

Still, it's disappointing that fans never got to see Luke in his prime, at least not for any extended period of time. Ezra, however, is a chance to fix that mistake. He's right at the prime of his power, he's got an enemy in Thrawn who is powerful enough to justify going all out, and he's back right in time to fight. Star Wars never gave fans Luke in his prime, but Ahsoka season 2 can give us Luke's replacement, Ezra Bridger, in his prime.
