Gully erosion destroys 30 houses in Edo community

Translate

A ravaging gully has destroyed over 30 houses in the Agor-Uwagboe community in the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The gully has also cut off the community’s access road through the Ofumwengbe and Egbiri communities, with a wooden bridge constructed to enable motorcycles to pass through.

A resident, Ernest Uwagboe, who has been at the forefront of creating awareness about the plight of the people in the community, said the gully had begun extending into the community.

Uwagboe feared that the entire community would be consumed by the gully in three years if the state government failed to intervene.

“Again, I will say it is time for the government to look into the matter. About 30 houses have already been lost to the gully, which keeps expanding every year.

“In three years, the community may no longer be in existence if the gully is not checked,” he added.

A spokesman for the community, Kenneth Adoni, said they had written several letters to various government agencies but had not received any help.

“We are begging Governor Monday Okpebholo to come and help us. For the past three years, the gully has caused lots of problems. We cannot cross to the other communities. Whenever it rains, children cannot go to school.

“We have also written letters to various government agencies on the need to fix the issue, but no one has come to our aid. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved soon,” he added.
