Farah Khan on life in showbiz: 'This industry makes you insecure. Because at all times you are comparing yourself to somebody else'

Farah Khan has worked as a choreographer, filmmaker, show judge and now a YouTuber. In a recent chat on Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi’s podcast, she spoke about her popular YouTube channel, where she visits celebrity friends at home with her cook, Dilip.

Farah said she never planned to run the channel for so long, but it has been a welcome change in her life.

Farah Khan says she did not plan her YouTube journey

Neha Dhupia congratulated Farah Khan on crossing 300 episodes and asked if she had planned this success from the start. Farah said no. She explained that she had some free time after completing the script of her next film, and she began the channel so she would not feel restless during that gap.“Later everyone said that I pivoted at the right time, but that is all destiny.

I get angsty, and if one is not doing anything, then after waking up they think that my film is not happening and someone else is making theirs. I can’t go through that. I have been through it when I wanted to make my first movie,” she said.

Farah Khan also spoke about the pressure of comparison in showbiz. “This industry makes you insecure. Because at all times you are comparing yourself to somebody else. That this actor is doing this film and whatnot.

When I hit 50, I told myself that I want to detach, cut off and live a happy life. But of course, we are hustlers, and YouTube is something that I didn’t realise that there was a lack of family-orientated content, perhaps, and people liked it, and of course, they liked Dilip.

As we went along, we kept tweaking the format,” she added.

What viewers get in Farah Khan’s vlogs

The channel now has over 3 million followers. In each video, Farah goes to a celebrity’s house, cooks a new dish in their kitchen, takes viewers on a home tour and chats over food.

Her fun banter with Dilip is a big highlight, and it has made him a social media star. In one vlog, Farah even admitted that she has raised Dilip’s salary since they began their YouTube journey.

Farah Khan’s film career

Farah made her directorial debut with ‘Main Hoon Na’ in 2004, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Sushmita Sen. She went on to direct ‘Om Shanti Om’ with Shah Rukh Khan and ‘Tees Maar Khan’ with Akshay Kumar. Her last film as director was ‘Happy New Year’, which came out in 2014.
