Mike Malott believes a victory over Joaquin Buckley could be the biggest step yet in his UFC career, with the Canadian welterweight expecting his toughest test when he headlines on home soil in Edmonton.

Malott, who has recorded notable victories over Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland and Charles Radtke, sees the upcoming contest as an opportunity to strengthen his position in the division and move closer to a title shot.

“Yeah, I think he’s probably the toughest test of my career to date. You know, the last few guys I’ve thought have been really high level fighters, like you said, Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland, Charles Radke. Those are really solid opponents,” Malott said.

“But this is probably my toughest test yet and a win over my opponent this weekend puts me firmly in the top 10 and just keeps that climb toward a title shot,” he added

Despite acknowledging Buckley’s explosive power and confidence, Malott believes he holds the advantage across all areas of the fight.

“Yeah he’s a very high level opponent he’s very explosive he’s very powerful he’s very confident yeah definitely one of the best fighters in the world but I think I have the advantage over him everywhere I think I’m a cleaner striker than he is I think I have better timing and ability to control on the feet,” he said.

Malott also backed his wrestling and grappling to make the difference, particularly in controlling positions on the ground.

A win could even put him within reach of a title eliminator. “It’s hard to say. I mean, a big win this weekend could put me right in like you said could put me in a title eliminator or could be one win away from a title shot after this win,” he said.
