There's been no shortage of Hellraiser movies and adaptations over the years, with the franchise expanding well beyond the original 1987 film directed by Clive Barker. While the original and its 1988 sequel, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, remain two of the most beloved entries in the franchise, the decades that followed brought a long line of increasingly divisive sequels, many of which failed to recapture the magic of the originals.
Even the 2022 Hellraiser reboot, which introduced Jamie Clayton as a new incarnation of Pinhead, got mixed responses from audiences, despite some positive critical reviews. Meanwhile, plans for a modern HBO television adaptation have yet to materialize, leaving fans wondering what the future holds for the legendary horror franchise.
Fortunately, Hellraiser has now made an incredible comeback in an entirely different format. Released on October 8 to overwhelmingly positive feedback from players and receiving an 8/10 from Screen Rant, Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival has breathed new life into the franchise, delivering a terrifying new adventure that fundamentally changes what fans thought they knew about Pinhead and the Cenobites.
!!! WARNING: SPOILERS FOR CLIVE BARKER'S HELLRAISER: REVIVAL BELOW !!!
Hellraiser: Revival Expands Cenobite Lore In The Best Way

The biggest revelation in Hellraiser: Revival comes during its climactic final chapter, when players discover that Pinhead's plans extend far beyond simply torturing random victims in the Labyrinth. Throughout the game, protagonist Aidan Lynch believes he's working to resurrect his girlfriend, Sunny, by collecting human hearts. However, it's eventually revealed that Sunny secretly made a bargain with Pinhead, agreeing to become the vessel for his rebirth in exchange for joining the Cenobites herself.
The resulting ritual transforms Pinhead into an entirely new incarnation of the Hell Priest, complete with a terrifying new appearance and enhanced powers connected to Leviathan, the mysterious godlike entity that rules the Labyrinth. As opposed to being a mere servant of Leviathan, Pinhead has effectively ascended to a higher level of existence, capable of experiencing even greater sensations.
This is an enormous development for Hellraiser mythology, suggesting that even the seemingly immortal Cenobites aren't necessarily trapped in their existing forms or roles within the supernatural hierarchy. Pinhead's transformation also opens the door to exploring the mysterious Void within Leviathan, a realm beyond the familiar Labyrinth.
Further, the game's two endings allow Aidan to either reject the Cenobites and remain human or follow them, beginning his own horrifying transformation into one of their kind and setting up a perfect sequel. Although neither ending has officially been established as the definitive outcome (for now), Pinhead's ascension occurs regardless of the player's decision. With Revival explicitly positioned as a new canonical chapter, its revelations could have enormous implications for the franchise's future.
Revival Is The Beginning Of A New Hellraiser Era

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival could be the beginning of a major rebirth for the long-running horror franchise. Despite nearly four decades of movies, an abandoned Nintendo game, and Pinhead's random appearance in Dead by Daylight, Revival is the franchise's first proper standalone video game. Its overwhelmingly positive receptio is proof positive of just how much potential the Hellraiser universe has in gaming.
Fortunately, Clive Barker has already expressed interest in continuing his relationship with Saber Interactive. Speaking with Dread Central following the game's launch, Barker revealed that he's looking forward to working with the developer again on other projects. While this doesn't necessarily confirm a Revival sequel or another Hellraiser game, it certainly leaves the door open for future collaborations.
Meanwhile, the franchise is expanding in other exciting directions that further rewrite or expand Cenobite lore in interesting ways. BOOM! Studios is releasing the Hellraiser Omnibus Vol. 1 on November 24, 2026, followed by a second volume in March 2027. Two brand-new comic series, Hellraiser: Hellbound Hearts and Hellraiser: New Parables, are also launching in January and April 2027, respectively, promising even more revelations about Pinhead and the Cenobites.
With Barker also expressing interest in returning to the franchise's cinematic roots, it's an exciting time to be a Hellraiser fan. Hopefully, Revival is just the first of many ambitious new games exploring Barker's horrifying universe. Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
