OIKN joins tree planting to restore fire-hit forest in Nusantara

Samarinda (ANTARA) - The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN), which oversees the development of Indonesia's future capital, participated in a tree-planting activity in a fire-affected area of Bukit Soeharto Grand Forest Park to support its forest city vision.

"This tree-planting activity, carried out alongside young residents, strongly supports the realization of Nusantara's forest city pillar," OIKN Head Basuki Hadimuljono said in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, on Saturday.

He said the initiative involved planting around 1,000 endemic tree seedlings across two hectares of protected forest within Nusantara's development area, which spans parts of Kutai Kartanegara and North Penajam Paser districts.

"Planting trees should be adopted as a sustainable lifestyle by all members of society," Hadimuljono added.

Initiated by the local youth group Borneo Kind, the activity involved around 400–500 volunteers from various segments of society.

The OIKN chief described the initiative as a form of government-community collaboration and expressed hope that it would encourage similar environmental sustainability efforts across East Kalimantan.

"Active participation of the younger generation is greatly needed to maintain the sustainability of Nusantara's forest area," said the former public works minister.

He further noted that OIKN remains committed to exploring opportunities for collaboration with young people to help the future capital develop into a green and sustainable city in East Kalimantan.

Wawan Irawan, a representative of Borneo Kind, said Bukit Soeharto Grand Forest Park was selected for the activity because it is a protected forest area that requires support to recover from the impacts of past fires.

He said the reforestation project was funded through public donations and supported by infrastructure and facilities provided by local stakeholders, including OIKN and the East Kalimantan provincial government.

"This ecosystem restoration effort is intended to help restore habitats for Kalimantan's endemic wildlife, including orangutans," he said.
